Error code P0443 indicates an issue with the EVAP purge control valve circuit in your Toyota VVT-i engine. The EVAP system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere, and this code suggests a malfunction in the circuit controlling the purge valve. Here’s how you can diagnose and fix it:

Steps to Diagnose and Fix P0443

1. Understand the Cause

• Possible Causes:
• Faulty purge control valve/solenoid.
• Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors in the purge valve circuit.
• Blown fuse in the EVAP system.
• Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) (less common).

2. Check the Purge Control Valve

• Location: The purge valve is usually located near the intake manifold or EVAP canister.
• Test:
• Disconnect the purge valve and check for blockages.
• Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the valve. (Typical resistance: 20–40 ohms; refer to your vehicle manual for specifics.)
• Apply 12V to the valve to see if it opens and closes properly.

Solution: Replace the valve if it’s not functioning.

3. Inspect the Electrical Circuit

• Check the wiring:
• Look for frayed, damaged, or disconnected wires.
• Check the connectors for corrosion or poor contact.
• Test for voltage:
• Use a multimeter to check if the connector supplying the purge valve gets 12V when the engine is on.
• If no voltage, trace the circuit back to the ECM and look for broken connections.

Solution: Repair or replace damaged wires/connectors.

4. Check Fuses

• Locate the fuse box (refer to your owner’s manual) and inspect the fuse for the EVAP system. Replace if blown.

5. Inspect the ECM

• If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, the ECM might be at fault. Use a scan tool to monitor the purge valve’s signal from the ECM.

Solution: Replace the ECM only after verifying it’s the root cause, as this is rare and expensive.

6. Clear the Code

• After repairs, use an OBD-II scanner to clear the code.
• Drive the vehicle to ensure the problem is resolved and the code doesn’t return.

Tools Needed

• OBD-II scanner.
• Multimeter.
• Basic hand tools.
• Wiring diagrams (from service manual).

If you’re unfamiliar with electrical systems or engine components, it’s best to consult a professional mechanic to avoid further issues. Would you like more detailed instructions on any of these steps?
