Parts suppliers are rolling out new driver monitoring systems designed to monitor a driver's head position, eyes and body to better determine if they are distracted or drowsy. Canadian supplier giant Magna International has developed a camera-based driver monitoring system that is integrated into a vehicle's rearview mirror. The system, which also uses infrared sensors, keeps a look out for signs of distracted driving and can send an audio or visual alert to the driver to have them refocus on the road. Advanced new systems will watch for fatigued facial expressions and droopy eyelids.

The i Vision Circular from BMW may not be among the automaker's highest profile concept cars of the past two years, but it has big implications for where the industry is headed in sustainable technologies. The small car — envisioned for around 2040 — was created entirely with recycled materials and bio-based raw materials. The body is recycled aluminum that uses no paint. No chrome is used. The tires are made of cultivated natural rubber that's sustainable. Material bonding throughout the car is achieved through new joining techniques that allow efficient dismantling at a later stage. BMW is already pressing its supply chain to lift its recycled and reused materials content level, which currently stands at 30 percent of content.

The future of the automotive industry is here. The first flying car has been officially approved for testing and will be ready for take-off in late 2025. The fully electric car, created by Alef Aeronautics, is priced at $300,000 and is now available for preorder.

Named ‘Model A,’ the vehicle will be able to carry one or two occupants and drivers will have the opportunity to use it on public roads and vertical takeoff, following four years of test flying in Palo Alto, California. This first car could drive a range of 200 miles and a flight of 110 miles.
