The Mohammad Al Amin Mosque, often called the "Blue Mosque" due to its prominent blue domes, is a magnificent Sunni Muslim mosque located in Martyrs' Square in downtown Beirut, Lebanon. It stands as one of the largest and most opulent mosques in the country, capable of accommodating around 5,000 worshippers.
History and Construction:
The mosque's story began in the 19th century with a Zawiya, a small prayer corner. The vision to build a grand mosque on this site emerged in the 1950s, but faced delays due to funding issues. Finally, in 2002, the foundation stone was laid following a generous donation by the late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri.
Tragically, Rafic Hariri was assassinated in 2005, before the mosque's completion. He is now buried next to the mosque in Martyrs' Square. The construction, which began in earnest in 2003, culminated in the mosque's inauguration on October 17, 2008, by his son, Saad Hariri.
Architecture and Design:
The design of the Mohammad Al Amin Mosque draws significant inspiration from the monumental Ottoman architectural style, particularly the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) in Istanbul. Lebanese architect Azmi Fakhoury brought this vision to life, incorporating local yellow sandstone from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the main structure.
Key architectural features include:
* Dominating Blue Domes: Five domes in total, all covered in distinctive light blue tiles, are the mosque's most recognizable feature and a prominent part of Beirut's skyline. The central dome reaches a height of approximately 48 meters.
* Towering Minarets: Four elegant minarets, each soaring to a height of 65 meters, frame the mosque and enhance the call to prayer's reach.
* Grand Interior: The interior boasts intricate marble work, stained glass windows, and ornate chandeliers. High arches create a sense of spaciousness, and the walls are adorned with beautiful Islamic calligraphy.
* Mihrab: The niche indicating the direction of Mecca is a focal point, decorated with intricate mosaics.
Cultural and Religious Significance:
Beyond being a place of worship, the Mohammad Al Amin Mosque has become a significant cultural landmark in Beirut. Its stunning architecture attracts visitors from around the world, and its presence in Martyrs' Square symbolizes the city's resilience and the Lebanese people's faith. Its proximity to the Maronite Cathedral of Saint George also stands as a powerful symbol of Beirut's diverse religious landscape and spirit of coexistence.
