Choosing the right bike for your female rider experience
While you think of motor cycle riding, you probably picture well muscled group of guys, cruising down the road in their helmets and other sports gear. While it may have been male dominated culture, more and more women are now taking up cycling culture and loving it. it may seem like a risky affair, but the women are owning up to the responsibility that comes with it and in return, they are enjoying the freedom, thrill and the sheer joy that comes with being on the fast lane on two wheels, and most importantly most are using as an avenue to campaign for certain causes that they hold close to their heart.
Experience
While being on the road is one of the most exciting experiences you will have as a female rider, there will be a few experiences that might put you off. Here are a few of the good and bad ones:
1. Falls and accidents
With more and more women taking up the interest in riding, there have been a few incidences of falls and accidents, something that is bound to happen considering the fact that most women are starting out on this. There has been need for more training on safety and capacity building to ensure that they do not add to the already alarming statistics on motor cycle accidents.
2. Social discrimination
Even as more female biking society sprout out in the country, the society still views it a male sport or venture. Most women with this passion will have gone against their parents; spouses or even friends wish to pursue their dream. It is also not uncommon for women bikers to receive lewd comments mostly by men, on the road. The society still needs time to adjust to this shift that is now taking the world by storm. However, events such as the Mt. Kenya Wild Motor Expo Kabiruini, are in support of female bikers.
3. Limited gear and bike selection
It is totally frustrating for women bikers who walk into a store and find that there is little or nothing for women. Sizing is also a big issue as most gear and bikes are designed to fit male demographic. Most bikes are tall. This is an issue that short women have to grapple with. The good news though is that some women are still able to adjust and maneuver with the tall bikes. Manufacturers should however be considerate of women when it comes to the sport and bike selection.
4. Campaign tool and empowerment
A group of women bikers commonly known as Throttle Queens recently took up the road on their two wheels and rode across east African countries. While this was thrilling and fun, they also had a bigger vision in mind. They used this avenue to urge more women to take up the sport and they also took it up upon themselves to campaign for road safety.
This goes a long way in showing that women too can achieve whatever they set their mind on. It is also a way to show that you can give to community through your biking passion.
Choosing the right sports motor bike
Getting your first bike should be an exciting affair. It is however important to consider what works best for you and obviously what you can afford. Most important piece of advice; take your time, do your research and know what you want before laying foot into that store. Here are a few considerations.
1. Safety
Before making your first purchase, ensure that youâve gone through a training program. Being on the road exposes you and others to so many risks. Even if you have been trained before ensure that you have gone through refresher course and are mentally prepared for this.
Additionally the bike you get should be the right one for you. Let it fit your size and consist of all the safety features that are latest in the market. Researching earlier allows you to look out for these aspects while you are in the show room store.
2. Motor cycle Insurance
While your mind may be squarely set on getting that sports bike, remember to add the insurance cost to your budget. Insurance will protect your if you cause personal injuries or property damage. It will also cover your medical bills and other possible things that may otherwise cost you. For most countries, insurance is a requirement by law.
3. Find out what fits you
Unfortunately, motorcycles do not come with adjustable features. When purchasing, it is therefore important to find out what is suitable for you. Consider the different types of motorcycles in the market and be comfortable enough to choose the best.
While sports bikes are great for riding at high speed as they are leaned forward with higher foot pegs and longer to reach handle bars, they can be tough on your back and hands when taken at slower speeds. Naked motor cycles are more ideal for beginners as the rider will mostly be in an upright position.
Though popular, cruisers can be difficult and uncomfortable for new riders. It is always great to check out different brands like Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda amongst others. The people in the show room will advice on whatâs best for beginners and may recommend something that suits your fancy.
4. Seat height and Bike weight
Donât forget to consider the height and bike weight. Remember as the rider, you will be the one to control the bike on the road, the more stable and comfortable you are on the bike, the more you will enjoy the cruise.
5. Research and Learn about the bike
It is important to research and learn about the bike that you choose even before making the purchase. Learn about the brand and the model. Look into reviews and online forums that discuss the model that youâve settled on. Learn about maintenance and where to get spare parts that you will need in future. Basically, know the bike inside out, after all you will soon be the owner.
We cannot exhaust everything that you need to know before purchasing the right bike. So long as youâve considered the most important factors, go with comfort and your instinct.
