🚨 EASTLEIGH COLLAPSE: THE PRICE OF SKIPPING THE PROFESSIONALS 🚨
On Friday afternoon, a multi-storey building under construction along Yusuf Haji Avenue, Eastleigh, came down while shops were still operating on the lower floors. All 67 workers on site were accounted for, but other people are still missing as rescue continues. Behind the headlines are families waiting for news.
At Ngaku Homes we say it plainly: buildings don't collapse by accident. They collapse by decisions.
🏗️ 1. EVERY BUILDING NEEDS PROFESSIONALS, BIG OR SMALL
• Architect: plans the space, layout, safety and approvals.
• Structural Engineer: designs the foundation, columns, beams and slabs to carry the loads safely.
• Quantity Surveyor (QS): prepares costs and budgets, and keeps materials and spending honest.
• Contractor: builds strictly to the approved drawings.
• Clerk of Works: checks quality and materials on site.
Remove one, and a gap opens. In construction, gaps become cracks.
📐 2. WHY THE DESIGN ENGINEER MATTERS HERE
A tall commercial building carries heavy loads for decades. The engineer's design is its safety calculation: steel sizes, concrete strength, reinforcement details. Only the designer can confirm on site that they are being followed.
⚠️ 3. WHEN THE DESIGN ENGINEER IS LEFT OUT
Without the engineer on site, nobody checks the reinforcement, the concrete mix or the curing. Changes go unapproved, and "savings" quietly replace critical elements with cheaper ones. The building looks right but isn't strong enough.
Reports say the engineer listed for this project has disputed responsibility. He says he never received an approval code for the designs and did no further work on the project. If confirmed, the question is who built, and on whose authority, without him.
🕳️ 4. THE SYSTEM AROUND US
Kenya keeps burying its people because of cartels in the building industry. These networks approve the unapproved, push cheap shortcuts and pressure professionals to look away. The NCA has found that 58% of buildings in Nairobi are unfit for habitation. The Governor says this building did not comply with construction guidelines, and that its owner and those who authorised it could face charges.
⚖️ WHERE LIABILITY MUST REST
Professionals advise. The client and their contractor decide what gets built. If drawings are ignored, supervision is dropped and materials are downgraded, responsibility lies with them. Let investigations establish the facts, and let justice follow.
👷 TO EVERY PROPERTY OWNER: Hire the professionals. Keep them involved from the first sketch to handover. Never trade safety for savings. A building exists to protect lives.
Dreams are crafted on paper, but realities must stand on sound engineering.
