TOYOTA DINOSAURS — THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL
1951 TOYOTA JEEP BJ
Before the FJ40. Before the legendary 70 Series. Before the Land Cruiser became one of the world's most respected off-road vehicles.
There was the Toyota BJ.
Developed in 1951 for Japan's National Police Reserve, the BJ was Toyota's answer to the need for a rugged, capable four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Built on a modified Toyota SB truck chassis, it featured a powerful 3.4-liter Type B inline-six petrol engine, 4WD and simple, heavy-duty construction.
THE ORIGINAL BJ — FACTORY SPECS
• Engine: Type B, 3.4L OHV inline-six petrol
• Displacement: 3,386 cc
• Power: 85 PS at 3,200 rpm
• Drivetrain: 4WD
• Wheelbase: 2,400 mm

The BJ didn't win the original military contract. But Toyota continued developing it, and the vehicle soon demonstrated its extraordinary capability by becoming the first motor vehicle to reach the sixth station of Mount Fuji.
Series production began in 1953.
In June 1954, the Toyota Jeep BJ received a new name: LAND CRUISER.
And the rest became automotive history.
More than seven decades later, the same philosophy remains at the heart of every Land Cruiser: reliability, durability and the ability to go almost anywhere.
