From 1st July 2026, the Government of Kenya may quietly unlock a brand new money-making channel — annual inspection fees for vehicles older than 4 years.

Let’s talk.

Most cars on Kenyan roads are older than 4 years anyway.
In fact, how many ordinary Kenyans are even driving cars less than 4 years old?

So this won’t affect “a few people.”
This touches a huge number of motorists.

And no… the biggest concern is not even the inspection itself.

Vehicle inspection, in principle, makes sense. Nobody wants dangerous vehicles on our roads.

The real issue is corruption.

NTSA has inspected PSV and commercial vehicles for years. Yet every day we still see some vehicles on our roads and wonder:

Who inspected this?
Where was it inspected?
How did it pass?

That’s the elephant in the room.

Just like renewing your driving licence, motorists may now have another annual expense — around 2–3k or more, depending on the process.

That means millions, maybe billions, collected yearly from the same Kenyans already dealing with:

- Housing Levy
- High fuel prices
- Expensive insurance
- Rising cost of living

And here’s the political bit.

Will the opposition call for maandamano over this?

Probably not.

Why?

Because private car owners are not viewed as a major political pressure group the way mama mboga, boda boda riders, and mass consumers are.

So while everyone is busy debating Ebola, Makumbusho, and the latest political drama, another policy quietly reaches into your pocket.

Sometimes the loudest news isn’t the most expensive.
