The 356 was the first car sold under the Porsche name, built from 1948 to 1965 with about 76,000 made. Ferry Porsche led the design, with Erwin Komenda doing the body. It was a lightweight rear-engine coupe or cabriolet with an air-cooled flat-4, and its early mechanicals drew on Volkswagen parts. The very first car, a mid-engine roadster, was completed in Gmünd, Austria in 1948. Production moved to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in 1950.
