A damaged exhaust system not only affects the vehicles durability and comfort, it's also a major contributing factor in engine damage.

A faulty/ damaged /rusted exhaust will not effectively remove the exhaust gases, and this will lead to carbon deposit build up which will affect other system such as EGV and spark plugs leading to engine misfire and back pressure.

It's always a good idea to have the exhaust system inspected from time to time to ensure its reliability and utmost efficiency.

The catalytic converter is the most vandalized part of a car and thus it’s prone to cover up with modification, from steel wool to wire gauze. Vandals stop at nothing.
This customer didn't know that the catalyst was vandalized, they had put a wire mesh strip to cover out the hollow sound which later caused blockage leading to drivability issues

Be on the watch, check you exhaust regularly
Don’t be left with surprises, have your catalyst inspected.

Effects of a damaged silencer is:
Increased noise levels. A damaged silencer can’t dampen the sound created by the exhaust system leading to increased noise levels.
Reduced engine performance. A damaged silencer causes restriction of air flow in the exhaust gases, chocking the engine ad reducing its performance
Safety concerns. A damaged silencer, can lead to fire, damage of other exhaust components, vibration and rattling noises

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER EXHAUST REPAIRS?

An exhaust is the most neglected part and most service centers do not even check the exhaust during regular service. This leads to breakdown leading to drivability issues.

Driving a vehicle with a broken or malfunctioning muffler or exhaust is dangerous.

The leakage may introduce carbon monoxide to your cabin thus creating discomfort for you and the passengers and in most cases cause headaches and fatigue which may lead to accidents.
Look out for the following signs which will necessitate exhaust repairs

1. Check engine light illuminates
2. Failing 02 sensor
3. Poor fuel economy
4. Sluggish acceleration
5. Reduced power
6. Clunking noise
7. Exhaust odours in cabin
8. Unburnt fuel odour
9. Hanging tail pipe/ exhaust parts
10. Vibrations from undercarriage at highway speeds
11. Vibration in accelerator pedal
12. Excess heat in the cabin
13. Loud exhaust noise
14. Suddenly quite exhaust sound
15. Smoke from exhaust

Should you experience any of above its highly advisable you visit us for free inspection and quality repairs.

What is a catalytic converter and how does it affect your vehicle?

A catalytic converter is an emissions control device in your vehicle's exhaust system that converts harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions. Here are some signs that your catalytic converter may be damaged:

Check Engine Light: If the check engine light comes on and stays on, it could be a sign that your catalytic converter is damaged or not working properly.

Reduced Performance: A damaged catalytic converter can cause reduced engine performance, including a decrease in power and acceleration.

Increased Exhaust Emissions: A damaged catalytic converter may allow excessive emissions to escape from your vehicle, which can be seen as black smoke or a strong odor coming from the exhaust.

Rattling Noise: If you hear a rattling or shaking noise coming from underneath your vehicle, it could be a sign that your catalytic converter is damaged or broken.

Poor Fuel Economy: A damaged catalytic converter can cause your vehicle to burn more fuel than usual, leading to poor fuel economy.

If you suspect that your catalytic converter is damaged, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your vehicle and ensure that it's operating safely and efficiently.

Did you know that all catalytic converters are not the same?
The amount of precious metal in catalytic converters vary as per the emission control standards.
Standards of emission such as Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5, Euro 6 and Euro 7 all have different amount of precious metal loading.
If you have or do suspect having a catalytic converter issue, look no further than Griffin Motorsport ltd.

Did you know modern vehicles whether diesel powered or petrol powered have emission control devices such as diesel oxidation catalyst, selective reduction catalyst and diesel particulate filters.
The SRC & DPF are combined into one unit in many diesel vehicles.
Both the catalytic converters and DPF require care and maintenance for them to perform to their optimum levels
Common symptoms of catalyst and DPF issues before the check engine/DPF light comes on are;
1. Loss of power especially uphill
2. Sluggish acceleration
3. Increased fuel consumption
4. Hard start
5. Exhaust gas odours
6. Oil level going up in diesel vehicles
To avoid catastrophic failures of engine and costly repairs there some small steps you can take to avoid such issues
i. Use correct emission control compatible oils with low SAPS rating
ii. Avoid short trips where the engine does not reach operating temperature
iii. Use correct fuel & regularly use fuel treatments
iv. Drive on highway speeds at least once a month
Should your vehicle have any of the above symptoms, visit us for a free check-up and maintenance advice
· DPF regeneration
· DPF cleaning
· DPF replacement
· Catalytic converter replacement
· All other exhaust related services

Despite the catalytic converter not having any moving parts, it is among the expensive components in a car and thus they get stolen every now and then.

Either they may be stolen or you might be convinced by crook mechanics to remove them.

However, before it reaches to a point of removal due to failure symptoms..........
Let's look at what can cause a catalytic converter to go bad and what you should do to maintain it

*Cause of failure*
1. Wrong engine oil
2. Road damage
3. Adulterated fuel
4. Fuel additives
5. Wrong A/ F ratio
6. Coolant leaks
7. Exhaust leaks

*Symptoms*
i. Sluggish acceleration
ii. Loss of power
iii. Louder engine on acceleration
iv. Poet fuel economy
v. Pungent odour in exhaust
vi. Exhaust gases in cab
vii. Misfire
vii. Hard starts
