Although BL's big news of the time was the launch of the Metro, the Mini also benefited from upgrades for the 1981 model year. The range was reduced to just three versions, comprising the City, HL and HL Estate (the latter retaining the Clubman-style front). All models now used the Metro's 998cc A-Plus engine, as well as featuring extra soundproofing and higher equipment levels. And of course, the Mini was still great value, with the well-equipped HL saloon (at £3122) costing just £27 more than the most basic Metro.
