Royal Enfield Story...
Symbol of class, history and machismo, Royal Enfield motorcycles are known for their thumping sounds and dominating feeling. The company started as a bicycle manufacturing unit in 1893 in England and in 1899 Enfield started experimenting with heavy bicycle frame with engine clamped to the frames. Prior to First World War, the company pre-fixed Royal to its name and supplied huge number of motorcycles to British army and Russian Government during the war.
In India, Royal Enfield forayed with made in England imported motorcycles in 1949. Enfield got a major break in the country when Government of India chose Royal Enfield Bullet as most suitable motorcycle for its Police and Army, for patrolling and commuting in remote areas. The Government ordered 800 Bullets with 350cc engine. In the same year, the Redditch Company signed agreement with Madras Motors to form Enfield India to assemble 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras under licence. In starting days, the machines were assembled from entirely imported components from England. Tooling was sold to Enfield in 1957, after which the company started manufacturing the components in India, by 1962, all the component were manufactured in the country itself.
Enfield was bought by Eicher Group in 1994 and in late 1995, Enfield India got the exclusive rights to use the name Royal Enfield. The company still makes 350cc and 500cc bikes which are essentially similar to the earliest models of Enfield. Now the company sells bike under the name of Royal Enfield to over 20 countries.
