MARUTI GYPSY

It is manufactured in India by Maruti Suzuki. It was introduced in the Indian market in December 1985 with the 970 cc F10A Suzuki engine and while sales were never very high it became very popular with law enforcement. It was codenamed MG410, which stood for "Maruti Gypsy 4-cylinder 1.0-litre engine". Initially, it was only available as a soft-top; but a bolt on hardtop was later introduced to the public after the aftermarket hardtops became popular. It instantly replaced Premier Padmini as the quintessential Indian rally car due to its performance, reliability, tunability and the go-anywhere capability. The carburetted F10A engine made 45 bhp (34 kW; 46 PS) and was mated to a four-speed gearbox. The 4WD transfer case had two speeds. It had a freewheeling mechanism on the front axles made by Aisin to unlock the front axles from the hub when 4WD is not used; It reduced rolling resistance, thereby improving fuel efficiency. However, many owners of the Gypsy who constantly complained about the poor fuel consumption never knew about this novel feature

The two major complaints of the vehicle in the civilian market were poor fuel consumption and poor ride quality especially in the rear seats. The suspension was indeed harsh with live axles and leaf springs all around. It features almost no creature comforts, like power-windows and power-assisted steering.

In July 1993, Maruti introduced the "widetrack Gypsy" codenamed "MG410W" replacing the MG410. Both front and rear track of the wheels are increased by 90mm (from 1,210 mm (47.6 in) to 1,300 mm (51.2 in) for front wheels and from 1,220 mm (48.0 in) to 1,310 mm (51.6 in) for rear wheels) and these Gypsys are instantly recognizable by the pronounced painted fender flares. This is to mitigate an international allegation that Suzuki SUVs are very susceptible to rollover. Maruti eliminated the Aisin freewheeling hub on this model since it was sparingly used by MG410 owners. In April 1995, a catalytic converter was fitted to the Gypsys sold in the metro cities to comply with newly introduced emission standards

In June 1996, Maruti added the engine from the Esteem. The new engine was the all-aluminium eight-valve G13BA engine displacing 1.3L and made 60 bhp (45 kW; 61 PS). This engine was carburetted unlike the US market G13BA engine. It was mated to a new five-speed gearbox. It was codenamed "MG413W" and called the "Gypsy King". The F10A-engined regular Gypsy continued in production until 2000 at least. The visual differences of the Gypsy King compared to the MG410W are the pronounced bulge on the hood and a completely different grille design with horizontal slats à la the 1.3L Suzuki Jimny/Samurai JA51.[3] Front seats received head restraints and fabric upholstery. In March 2000, Maruti introduced the 16-Valve MPFI G13BB engine and power was increased to 80 bhp (60 kW; 81 PS). The MPFI Gypsy King received a brake booster as well.

2017 Launching New Maruti Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny is currently in its third generation and has a legacy spanning back to the 70s. We in India are more familiar with its 2nd generation, long wheelbase version- The Gypsy, which is still used in the Indian army and some off-roading events.

The current generation car has been around since 1998 and dealers across Europe are putting the pressure on Suzuki to build a new one. With manufacturing to take place in India, Maruti might also try to revive the Gypsy brand here.

If you have seen the Suzuki Ignis, you might get a rough idea of how the new Jimny will turn out. However, expect jeep-ish, rugged styling instead of the mature, rounded design, seen on the Ignis. The car will also share platform, compact dimensions (sub-4m) and the 4×4 system with the latter.

The Jimny will be available with 4 doors and interior will get features on par with the Baleno and the Ignis.

Powering the Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be a 1.0 liter boosterjet petrol mill, while globally a 1.4 liter unit might be provided. A new automatic transmission is also on cards.

There is no news of a diesel variant of the Jimny as of yet

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, while made in India, is primarily intended for the Global market. Production is expected to start by early 2017 at the Manufacturer’s Gujarat plant. Indian launch date is unconfirmed.

Austin Somerset A40 [1952]

The A40 Somerset is an automobile that was produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1952 until 1954. The Somerset replaced the Austin A40 Devon and as a body-on-frame car it was comparable in size to its predecessor. It shared a number of components with the Devon which included a similar 1.2 Litre straight-4 pushrod engine. The Somerset's engine was updated to produce 42 hp (31 kW), compared to the Devon's 40 hp (30 kW), giving the car a top speed of 70 mph (110 km/h).

The Somerset features an updated "Transatlantic" body style with flowing lines as distinct to the Devon's bulky looking body. Resembling the larger Austin A70 Hereford, its design was aimed at improving export sales, particularly to America. Initially offered as only a 4-door saloon, a 3-passenger 2-door convertible, of the same body style was introduced in late 1952. The convertible replaced the earlier Austin A40 Dorset

Civilian production resumed in July 1945, with an early start to the 1946 model year filling the public's thirst for new cars. The 1946 Ford was identical to the 1942 model under the skin, though a heavy new grille with horizontal bars and red accents modernized the car somewhat. The hood was widened by adding a center strip. One notable change was to use the 239 CID engine which since 1939 had been used in Mercurys and trucks, and capable of 100 hp (75 kW) for the first time. With steel in short supply, Ford produced a distinctive "Sportsman" convertible with wood side panels, supplied from the Ford Iron Mountain Plant. The convertible had an electric top instead of manual one.

In the film Back to the Future, Biff Tannen's car in 1955 was a black 1946 Ford Super De Luxe convertible. After the film, the car was kept by Universal and displayed in their back lot tour. The car is now in a private collection, but a short film about it can be found here
