Tokyo Motor Show 2017: Yamaha Niken is a three-wheeled lean machine

At the Tokyo Motor Show 2017, Yamaha has brought some unique ideas, of which the Yamaha Niken is the most bizarre. Yamaha refers to the Niken as a Large Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW), since it features two wheels up front and one at the rear. While three-wheelers are not a new concept, it is the lean function that makes the Yamaha Niken stand out. The Niken features two 15-inch wheels at the front, each sprung by two tandem upside down forks. It has a wide front face that is part sportsbike and part quad fender. The Yamaha Niken comes powered by a water-cooled inline three-cylinder engine with four valves.

The Yamaha Niken is 885mm wide. Yamaha claims that the LMW setup results in a sense of stability when cornering irrespective of changing road surfaces. Its promo video shows a man who crafts some high tech skis which he then takes to a winding tarmac road, where it transforms in the Yamaha Niken.

Tata Nexon production begins ahead of festive season launch
20th Jul 2017 2:20 pm
The Nexon compact SUV will come with a 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine; to rival EcoSport and Vitara Brezza

Tata Motors has rolled out a batch of Nexon compact SUVs from its Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra. The Nexon will be showcased at various Tata dealerships in the coming days, ahead of its market launch slated to take place during the festive season.

Tata Motors recently released the engine and gearbox details of the compact SUV. The Nexon will come with a 110hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit, also developing the same amount of power. The diesel engine puts down 260Nm of torque while the petrol delivers 170Nm. Both engines will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. A diesel-AMT combination will be launched after a few months.

The Nexon’s styling is based on Tata’s Impact design language that was seen earlier on the Hexa, the Tiago and the recently launched Tigor compact sedan. Unlike a more traditional SUV stance, the Nexon uses a coupe-like profile. It gets stylish dual-tone touches on its exterior and will come with similar interior quality seen on the Tiago and the Tigor compact sedan.

On the inside, the Nexon gets a free-standing 6.5-inch touchscreen. The touchscreen system sits atop the dash, while the rest of the interior follows a simple, straightforward design with a lot of bits borrowed from other Tata cars. Expect the Nexon to be well-equipped, with features like climate control and rear aircon vents, to name a few.

A standout feature will be the drive mode controller, a segment-first, which, interestingly, isn’t a small button but a nice chunky k**b to choose between three drive modes – Eco, City and Sport.

The Nexon will take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Maruti Vitara Brezza, both being popular contenders in the sub-four-metre compact SUV segment. Expect Tata to price the Nexon SUV aggressively in the region of Rs 7-10 lakh.

2017 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled launched at Rs 9.32 lakh
The Ducati Scrambler is already available in a number of flavours, but those are mostly cosmetic changes with differences to wheels, mild body work changes and the occasional exhaust. For the Desert Sled, Ducati gave the bike a serious overhaul with a modified and strengthened chassis, higher-spec long-travel suspension and an accompanying jump in ground clearance. All these work together to make the Desert Sled a far more capable motorcycle off road than its standard siblings.

The Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled is equipped with a Euro 4 compliant version of the 803cc air-cooled engine from the Scrambler and recently launched Monster 797. The engine makes the same 73hp and 67Nm as before but gains fresh engine calibration that is claimed to smooth out power delivery at lower revs.

The frame has been modified for extra strength and the swingarm has been reinforced as well. Wheelbase is longer too. The new suspension offers proper adjustability and a comprehensive 200mm of travel, up from 150mm. This updated suspension is what we’ve longed for after the regular Scrambler’s rather primitive setup. Where the regular Scrambler gets an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup, the Desert sled gets a more off-road friendly 19/17 arrangement wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres. All this brings a big increase in ground clearance, but also means the bike is significantly taller, with a lofty seat height of 860mm compared with the regular bike’s friendly 790mm perch. Ducati will offer a 20mm lower seat as an accessory.

Visual updates come in the taller mudguards, headlamp mesh guard, skid plate, lovely gold finish on the wheels and visibly meatier 46mm upside down forks. The Desert Sled is available in two colours ‘Red Dusk’ and ‘White Mirage’ and priced at Rs 9.32 lakh and Rs 9.45 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Bookings are open and deliveries will commence within a week.

Along with the Desert Sled launch, Ducati has also announced that the Scrambler Icon and Scrambler Classic are now back on sale in Euro 4/BS4 guise after sales of the previous BS3 models had to be discontinued in April 2017 with the new standards coming into effect. The Icon is priced at Rs 7.23 lakh and the Classic at Rs 8.48 lakh (ex-showroom); deliveries will begin by next week.

Maruti Baleno Alpha automatic launched at Rs 8.34 lakh
21st Jul 2017 6:50 pm
With this launch, three out of four variants of the petrol Baleno now get the option of a CVT automatic gearbox

Maruti today introduced the option of an automatic gearbox on the fully loaded petrol Alpha trim of its Baleno premium hatchback. The top variant with the Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic gearbox is priced at Rs 8.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

When the Baleno was launched in 2015, the option of an automatic gearbox was only available on the lower Delta trim. Then, in April 2016, Maruti introduced the CVT gearbox on the higher Zeta variant. Currently, only the base Sigma trim misses out on the CVT option.

The Alpha variant of the Baleno comes equipped with projector headlamps, reverse camera and SmartPlay infotainment system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink. Other features include leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear k**b, automatic headlamps, alloy wheels, keyless entry and go with push-button start.

Maruti has sold over 2,00,000 units of the Baleno till date, crossing the 1,00,000-units sales milestone in less than a year, it said in a statement. Notably, the share of automatic gearbox-equipped models in its entire fleet has risen to 11 percent in 2016-17 from 6 percent in 2014-15. The country’s largest carmaker aims to sell 3,00,000 units of models equipped with an automatic gearbox by 2020, up from 1,50,000 units at present.

Latest sightings of the new Rolls-Royce SUV suggest it is in the advanced stages of development. Though the car is yet to have an official name, it is referred to as ‘Project Cullinan”. The new SUV is poised to be the first all-wheel-drive car from Rolls-Royce.

The Cullinan will likely use a developed version of the Phantom’s 6.8-litre, V12 engine. A plug-in hybrid powertrain could also be offered at a later stage, using technology from its parent company, the BMW Group. Rolls-Royce has dismissed the idea of a diesel variant.

The carmaker has described its future model as an ‘all-terrain, high-sided vehicle’. Other Rolls-Royce models will also use the steel architectonics of the Cullinan from 2018. Its boxy design resembles Rolls-Royce's flagship Phantom rather than the Ghost.

Rolls-Royce is expected to launch its latest SUV internationally in 2018 and will lock horns with Bentley Bentayga in the premium luxury SUV segment. There’s no confirmation yet if and when it will come to India.

2017 Jeep Compass
Jeep finally made its way to India earlier this year and while its current SUVs are far from the reach of the common man, the American automaker will be introducing a more affordable SUV in the second half of 2017. To be locally manufactured for domestic and global markets, the Jeep Compass was recently unveiled in Brazil and shares its underpinnings with the Renegade compact SUV.

The Jeep Compass will come equipped with 4x4 right from launch, keeping the brand's off-roading heritage intact.
