It is located in the western part of the state in the Kongu Nadu region. Coimbatore is known as the "Manchester of South India"[2][3] and is one of the industrialized towns of Tamil Nadu. The region is bounded by Palghat district of Kerala on the west and by Idukki district of Kerala in the South. Coimbatore shares its borders with Tirupur in the East and Nilgiris in the North. Erode district shares the border near Puliampatti in the North East. The headquarters of the district is Coimbatore city. As of 2011, Coimbatore district had a population of 3,458,045 with a sex-ratio of 1,000 females for every 1,000 males. Also known as Kovai, Coimbatore is the second largest city of TamilNadu and one of the fastest growing cities in India. Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, it is known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise. Cotton textiles, electric motors, pumps, automobile spares, iron steel and aluminium castings form major exports from Coimbatore.
