The two-second rule is a rule of thumb by which a driver may maintain a safe following distance at any speed. The rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of his vehicle.

You should ideally be able to see the rear wheels of the car in front of you touching the ground. If you can, then there is enough room for you to safely manoeuvre around that car in the case of an emergency. Their car may break down, a danger may approach from behind, or you may need to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle.
