The local community uses the river for their livelihood.

Our “floating resort” is comprised of 9 houseboats based on the iconic kettuvalam rice boats of Kerala. The boats are built with age-old methods using jackfruit wood tied with coconut coir and no metal joinery in order to preserve the traditional boatbuilding culture. In the early houseboat industry, the waste from the boats was disposed of directly into the water. In order to benefit the locals,

the river ecosystem, and set a good example for other houseboats, we have created an inner bladder in the hull to hold the waste, which was then treated properly at the Riverscapes home. In the spirit of collaboration, the use of the sewage treatment plant is offered to other houseboat companies. The employees are 100% from the local community, and previously either worked as fishermen or other water based livelihoods. The cuisine served at Riverscapes are high quality examples of local Kerala cuisine.

At Xandari Riverscapes, we had the honour of hosting the wonderful students of a Buds School for a specially arranged complimentary day cruise filled with laughter, music, gentle waters, and heartfelt moments.

Watching these specially abled children experience the backwaters with such pure joy was a reminder that the simplest journeys often leave the deepest impact. 💛

For us, hospitality has always gone beyond welcoming guests. It is also about embracing the communities around us with warmth, care, and meaningful experiences that create lasting memories.
