In 1984, the Bullet Superstar hit Indian roads. An update of the 350cc Bullet, that had remained largely unchanged for decades, the Superstar featured a revamped headlamp and instrument panel, which replaced the traditional casquette, rubber fork gaiters and lashings of chrome. Colour choices were black, red or burgundy. A popular export, the Superstar featured an optional 280mm single disc front brake, the first time disc brakes were seen on a Bullet. A total celeb in the 120 years of Royal Enfield.

One of the most distinctive features of the Bullet and Classic models is their all-in-one headlamp unit which cleverly incorporates both the fork head and instrument panel. First showcased on Bullets, Meteors and 500 Twins in 1954, the casquette was later used on Bullets assembled in India, where its charismatic twin pilot lights are affectionately known as ‘tiger eye lamps’. 66 years old, and still a shining light in the 120 years of Royal Enfield.

In 1954, RH Watton, an engineer from Redditch, was given the duty of generating watts, rather than miles, from his Enfields. His machines? The Enfield generators at Port Lockroy British Antarctic Survey base. A task of extreme skill, on which lives literally depended. If you ever make it to the frozen continent, you’ll be able to view these unique machines preserved in the Port Lockroy museum. A standout story of peak performance in the 120 years of Royal Enfield.

When the newly-constructed Enfield India factory opened in 1956, workers assembled Bullets shipped from Redditch Royal Enfield in kit form, a process known as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) production. Over the following decade, local production took over until every component was manufactured in India. Piece by piece, the Bullet transformed from a CKD British motorcycle to a wholly Indian-made one. A journey from Redditch to Madras that defined the future in the 120 years of Royal Enfield.

Introduced in 1962, the Interceptor, Royal Enfield’s 51bhp 750cc twin, was a stonkingly-fast roadburner with imposing good looks. From the mid-1960s, MK1A and Series II Interceptors, mostly built for export to the US, were manufactured hundreds of feet below ground in the same Royal Enfield factory at Upper Westwood that had protected its WWII production from Luftwaffe bombers. A machine that could truly fulfil the need for speed in the 120 years of Royal Enfield.
