Short dark evenings, icy or foggy mornings, sudden showers, and heavy rain - when you're driving in Winter, crystal-clear vision is everything. It's one of the biggest factors in road safety, helping you spot hazards long before they become a problem.
That’s why, for Week 2 of our Winter Ready series, we’re looking at wipers and visibility 👀
Here’s a quick check you can do at home:
🧼 Clean first: A lot of smearing is just road grime. Wipe the rubber edge of each blade with a cloth dampened with screen-wash or soapy water, and give the windscreen a good clean too. Then run them with a splash of fluid and see how they do.
🔍 Check the rubber: Still not right? Inspect the blade. If the rubber is cracked, split, or has gone hard and stiff, they’re worn out. The same goes if they squeak, judder, or leave smears across the glass. Worn blades that don’t clear water properly cut your visibility a lot on winter roads.
❄️ A quick tip for frosty mornings: Always clear the ice off your glass before you switch the wipers on, and lift them off the screen if they’re frozen down so you don’t tear the rubber. And as tempting as it is when you're rushing, never use boiling water to clear the ice - the sudden temperature shock can easily crack your windscreen.
