Please share with all your loved ones, family and friends who ride e-scooters. There are very few responsible ones I see around Waterford. Most just flaunt rules of the road if they even know them!!!! And are simply dangerous and we as driver are busy watching to try keep them safe when they don’t even try themselves.

🛴 As of today, 4 September 2026, helmets and high-visibility clothing are mandatory for e-scooter users.

These new road safety requirements, introduced by Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien and Minister of State with responsibility for Road Safety Seán Canney, are designed to help reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities associated with e-scooter use.

Whether you're travelling by e-scooter, bicycle, motorcycle or car, road safety is a shared responsibility.

Great article and I agree with this potential approach, always I see people completely in the wrong giving out as if they are right, there is a serious lack of “reading the road” ,“observation” and general knowledge of the rules of the road as mentioned in the article and especially roundabouts and how to execute correctly.

It wouldn't have to mean someone loses their licence if they fail but could instead mean they have to undertake a lesson or two to get them to ...

The first time most Irish drivers go on a motorway, they have already passed their test.

That is not an accident of design. A learner permit covers every public road in the country except motorways, so motorways stays off limits until the day the full licence arrives.

The Minister of State for Transport now says that gap is worth a look. Speaking on a national radio show, he said learner drivers need some experience of coping with a motorway or a dual carriageway, whether that comes on a real road or in a simulator.

He said he will ask the Road Safety Authority to review the driving test curriculum to see if it still reflects the roads people are actually using.

He also accepted the obvious snag. Counties like Donegal and Longford have no motorway at all, which makes testing on one difficult.

Nothing has changed yet, and any review would take time. But almost everyone reading this remembers their own first merge.
