🌊🟠🟡 STORM BOELO UPDATE 🟡🟠🌊

Storm Boelo will impact Ireland this Saturday and Sunday over the bank holiday weekend with heavy rainfall and very strong winds.

The strongest winds are currently forecast across the west, north and north of Ireland from Saturday afternoon into Sunday. The strongest winds are likely to occur across these counties on Saturday evening, Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Winds will be westerly 1st on Saturday veering north-westerly on Saturday night and Sunday morning

🟠 Within the orange area there is a risk of Widespread mean speeds between 65 and 80km/hr and Widespread gusts between 110 and 130km/hr.

🟡 Much of the rest of Ireland will see widespread mean speeds between 55 and 65km/hr widespread gusts between 90 and 110km/hr

🟠 Donegal, North Leitrim, North Sligo, West Mayo, West Galway, North Derry and North Antrim will likely experience the strongest winds with mean winds speed between 65km/hr to 80km/hr and winds gusting between 100km/hr to 130km/hr especially along coastal areas of these counties. Places like Malin Head could see gusts up to 140k/hr for a brief time.

🌊

Impacts on North, Northwest, and West Coasts

We are now entering a period of spring tides over the bank holiday weekend with the below impacts likely this weekend

• Coastal Flooding & Wave Overtopping:
High spring tides combined with strong onshore winds, large Atlantic swells, and potential storm surges significantly increase the risk of coastal flooding and wave overtopping in low-lying and exposed coastal areas.

• Disrupted Drainage: High spring tides can prevent local rivers and streams from discharging freely into the sea at peak tide times, compounding river and surface flooding risks in coastal catchments.

• Dangerous Sea Conditions: Strong to gale-force northwesterly to westerly winds will generate rough to high seas, big marine swells, and hazardous conditions for shipping and coastal paths.

• Travel & Disruption: Coastal roads, piers, and low-lying promenades may experience temporary closures or debris due to wave action and salt spray

• Heavy rainfall this weekend combined with the above conditions will increase the flooding risk.

Anyone planning events this weekend should keep tuned to the forecast as weather warnings are likely to be issued and possibly another named storm. Anyone with outside Halloween decorations should consider taken then in until next week with another windy spell of weather possible early next week again with a potential improvement later next week and over Halloween with higher pressure building again.

No weather warnings have been officially been issued by Met Eireann as of yet even though the say they will follow. The reason for this potentially could be down the work-to-rule actions that are continuing within the public sector. Warnings are likely to be issued on Friday.
