A busy week for the Safe Water Training team!

Our team has been working around the country, supporting rescue units, developing coxswains and helping build safer, more effective operations on the water.

🚤 Ballybunion Sea Rescue
We spent the weekend working with coxswains to begin the process of standardising and updating operational procedures, sharing best practice and supporting ongoing coxswain CPD. The aim is to build consistency, confidence and effectiveness across the unit.

🛟 Civil Defence training
We also delivered training courses for Civil Defence units in Cavan, Carlow and Wexford. Well done to everyone who successfully completed their courses, and thank you to all involved for your commitment to developing your skills and capabilities.

🤿 Developing our own team
While we’re busy delivering training, we’re committed to developing our own instructors too. Alex, one of our instructors and Dive Boat Coxswain Instructors, has been progressing his own diving qualifications. Continuing to build his knowledge and experience helps us deliver even more relevant, tailored training to the teams we work with.

At Safe Water Training, we believe that learning never stops. Whether we’re supporting volunteer rescue services, developing coxswains or investing in our own team, our focus remains the same: building safer, more capable teams on and around the water.

It was a privilege for Safe Water Training to support Galway Civil Defence with this significant multi-agency Search & Rescue exercise on Lough Corrib.

Hosted by Galway Civil Defence, the exercise brought together Civil Defence boat units from Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Clare, alongside Westport Coast Guard, Corrib Mask Search and Rescue and Irish Coast Guard Rescue 115.

Safe Water Training and Wild Galway Boat Tours worked closely with Galway Civil Defence in the planning and delivery of the exercise, supporting the development of the scenarios, logistics, provision and deployment of search targets, and coordination with Exercise Control throughout the day.

With multiple search areas, vessels and teams operating across Lough Corrib, the exercise provided a valuable opportunity to test interoperability between different organisations and resources in a realistic operational environment.

From search planning and sector allocation through to communications, mapping, target deployment and the coordination of multiple rescue craft, the day provided crews with an opportunity to work alongside teams they may not normally operate with.

As the national training provider for Civil Defence boat units, Safe Water Training works with teams across the country, so it was particularly rewarding to see crews from different counties come together, operate alongside each other and share their experience.

Exercises like this are about much more than completing a scenario. They’re about building relationships, testing systems and developing the confidence and interoperability needed before those skills are required for real.

A huge credit to Galway Civil Defence for hosting the exercise and bringing so many agencies, crews and resources together.

Thank you also to everyone who contributed to the planning, logistics and operational delivery, and particularly to Wild Galway Boat Tours for their significant involvement throughout the exercise.

We thoroughly enjoyed being part of it and hope this is the first of many similar multi-agency water-based exercises around the country.

Training for the real world.

NOTICE OF EXERCISE - LOUGH CORRIB
Galway Civil Defence will host a planned Search & Rescue training exercise on Lough Corrib this Saturday, 3rd October 2026.
The exercise will involve Civil Defence personnel and rescue craft from a number of counties, along with supporting resources, working together to practise water search and rescue, communications, navigation and inter-unit coordination.
Members of the public may notice an increased presence of rescue boats, emergency vehicles, drones and personnel around Lough Corrib and the Cong area throughout the day.

The exercise provides an important opportunity for participating teams to train together, share skills and experience, and strengthen interoperability between neighbouring units.

We thank the public and other users of Lough Corrib for their co-operation and understanding.

Training for the real world.

Operating a rescue boat isn’t simply about being able to drive a boat.

Teams working on the water need to be able to make decisions, communicate effectively, understand their equipment and operate safely when conditions become challenging.

That’s why our training focuses on practical, scenario-based exercises that reflect the environments and situations teams may encounter operationally.

From boat handling and navigation to crew coordination, rescue techniques and decision making — the aim is to develop capable, confident crews.

Training for commercial operators, search & rescue organisations, emergency services, statutory agencies and voluntary organisations.
