Fuji Heavy Industries, the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, celebrates the 50th anniversary of its horizontally-opposed “Boxer” engine this year. The Boxer engine is so called because the movement of the engine’s pistons resembles the movement of a boxer’s fists.

Subaru’s signature engine was introduced on the Subaru 1000 compact passenger car in May 1966. Since then, Subaru has pursued to maximize the advantages of its Boxer engines, both petrol and diesel, and continuously enhanced them to power its vehicles.

Today, every vehicle sold by Subaru is fitted with a Boxer engine and its total production over the past 50 years tops 16 million units.

In a horizontally-opposed design of the engine, the pistons face each other in a side-to-side symmetrical layout. The opposing pistons work to cancel out the inertia force of each other, resulting in less vibration and superb rotational balance which provide a smooth feel right up to the high rev range.

The Boxer engine is one of the key components that comprise Subaru’s distinctive Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. This offers a combination of superior stability and traction intrinsic to AWD. It offers balanced distribution of weight provided by the symmetrically-laid-out drivetrain with a longitudinally-mounted Boxer engine positioned in line with it. The synergy delivers excellent performance such as stability at high speeds and brisk cornering.

Under the “Confidence in Motion” brand statement, Subaru says that it will continue to enhance its engineering excellence and distinctive appeal to offer an “enjoyment and peace of mind” driving experience to customers worldwide.

The average tank doesn’t have the ceramic brake upgrade, and needs greater than the average distance to come to a stop. By the time the young driver of this tank managed to bring it to a complete stop it was already two thirds of the way over the bonnet of the Toyota Yaris that had pulled out on it.

In fairness the young learner driver might have thought she had room. She might have panicked half way out and stalled the car. There are several reasons this could have happened, all of them would be reasonable and probably understandable given the situation. In retrospect, waiting for the convoy of 62 tonne military vehicles to pass was probably the safer option.

Thankfully no one was hurt. The tank crew were, unsurprisingly, completely fine. They managed to pull the learner driver from the car.

Remember people, armoured vehicles should only be taken on if you have a bigger armoured vehicle… and preferably air support too :)

Do You Lie For Cheaper Insurance?

According to recent figures there are tens of thousands of motorists telling lies when applying for their car insurance. The reason for this is obvious, cheaper premiums are hard to come by these days, but is it worth the risk?

Like many things, we think we can get away with it, but give an insurance company any excuse not to pay out and they’ll take it, as lots of motorists are finding out every year. The lie might seem relatively small at the time, failing to mention a speeding fine or past conviction, or putting someone else down as the main driver, but some are telling larger lies, such as giving false addresses in better post codes and making up longer no claims periods.

Whatever the lie or omission, no matter how small or big, if the insurance company can use it to invalidate your insurance and avoid paying out, they will.

We suspect more and more people are doing this than ever, with ridiculously high insurance premiums and an economic climate that is less than ideal, saving a couple of hundred quid can make a lot of difference.

Insurance companies report catching out tens of thousands of motorists, so you would think if you factor in all those people who have no reason to make a claim, so are not caught, the real figure of people telling porkies when applying for car insurance probably runs into the hundreds of thousands.

When an insurance company invalidates your insurance it can leave you open to all sorts of problems. With invalid insurance you will have been driving illegally and could potentially be open to prosecution, not just from the police, but from any victims of the accident you were involved in.

So while it is ultimately your choice how desperate you are to save money on your car insurance, it is also one hell of a risk.

THE END OF SAAB..
The current owner of Saab, the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), has announced no more cars will be produced bearing the badge. Earlier reports had said they intended to use the marque on an all new electric vehicle, but have instead taken the decision to use the vehicle to build their own brand name.

The first Saab was launched way back in 1949. They had started by manufacturing aircraft for the Swedish air force. When the Second World War drew to a close they needed to diversify into other markets, and the Saab 92 was born. While Saab where never one of the biggest manufacturers on our roads, their quirky styling and performance earned them a loyal following.

Saab might not be the first brand you think of when you think about cutting edge technology, but they had quite a few firsts over the years, including:

1958. First car fitted with seatbelts as standard. GT 750
1970. Saab introduces headlamp wipers and washers to the world.
1971. The first heated seats fitted as standard.
1976. First turbo engine with a wastegate.
1981. Saab introduces the split-field side mirror. This reduces the driver’s blind spot.
1982. Saab introduces asbestos-free brake pads.
1983. Saab introduces the 16-valve turbocharged engine
1991. The first manufacturer to offer CFC free air conditioning.
2002. They unveil the second-generation Saab Active Head-Restraint system, known as SAHR2, in the new Saab 9-3 sedan, which will reduce whiplash.

They had a definite focus on safety, and contributed more to the world of motoring than their size would suggest.

At CashForCar.ie we still buy all models of this nice make.

RIP Saab.

€21,000 in property and cash is stolen from parked cars in Ireland every single day.

The Herald reports that €7.6m worth of goods was taken from unlocked cars or vehicles which had door locks broken over the past 12 months.

The latest Gardaí statistics also show that 25% of cars left parked outside Irish homes are unlocked and cars are most vulnerable in Dublin.

Around half of all thefts occur on Friday and Saturday nights.

Motorists are being urged to take extra precautions when parking and to always lock their car doors.
