Noted for its relaxed, open door policy the club has always welcomed new runners of all capabilities & gains a large number of new members yearly from the Fit4Life programme whilst still encouraging & assisting more accomplished athletes to achieve their goals. The club is a great supporter of local & national athletics, the maroon & white singlets are regularly seen pounding the roads around Galw
ay City & County and further afield with the Dublin City Marathon being the highlight of many members racing calendar. The club also has had some international runners amongst its ranks with Paul Hession representing Ireland at the Bejing & London Olympics in the 200m sprints & also becoming the first Irish man to qualify for a 200m European Athletics final in 2010 at Barcelona. We currently have two national record holders with Valerie Glavin the holder for longest distance covered in 24hrs indoors (217.8km) & Ruthann Sheahan the holder for longest distance covered in 24hrs outdoors (229.3km). Ruthann set this record whilst representing Ireland in the 2012 World & European 24hr Championships where she finished as 5th European & 7th in the World. The club holds its flagship race, the Fields of Athenry 10km, every St Stephens Day & it has grown to become one of the top 10km road races in the country, drawing in excess of 1400 runners from across the country every year. Club members meet at various locations & times throughout the week although the Saturday morning club run at 9.00am from the Church Car Park is a long tradition which is open to everyone of all fitness levels. We also have weekly Speed sessions which take place every Tuesday with Tempo sessions on Thursday. Both begin at 7pm and start from the Church car park.
