Back with another what not to say post - but this time for depression. The words “I’m sooo depressed” get thrown around so often that people forget that there is a huge difference between being sad and being clinically depressed.
If your depressed your sadness doesn’t go away after a good night of sleep. You can’t just “snap out of it” or “think happy thoughts”. Saying things like “it’s all in your head” or “it can’t be that bad” are not helpful at all and just because someone doesn’t look like they are struggling from the outside doesn’t mean they cannot be experiencing mental health difficulties. We all experience things differently so comparing misfortunes is not helpful either. Saying things like, “you think you have it bad well I...” will not help. Use supportive terminology and ask questions rather than give unsolicited advice or make inferences about someone’s mental health based on what you see.
I have a “what to say” post coming up soon... stay tuned 🦋
