This P26 carbon sailboat, owned by multiple short-handed race winner Gábor Fazekas, came to us for one reason: to make a fast boat even faster.

In collaboration with naval architect Balázs Kárpáti, we redesign the rigging and cockpit ergonomics, eliminating unnecessary movement and ensuring every control falls naturally to hand.

The first photo captures the process behind the performance: hours of measuring, fitting, and fine-tuning together with Hubert Lél, professional sailor, and István Borhi, engineer 😎

Last year, we had the privilege of restoring another icon: a 1976 Koopmans 42.

Designed by the legendary D. Koopmans Sr. in the Netherlands and based on No. 139 Bylgia — the first Dutch yacht to sail single-handed around the world from east to west — she is a true classic.

An aluminium hull, a teak superstructure, and a beautifully crafted teak interior. Pure beauty.

She arrived at our yard from Lelystad, the Netherlands, after years in the care of a Dutch family. Over time, the scale of the refit became too great, and Főárbóc took over her restoration.

Her complete renovation was a heroic undertaking, to say the least: around 3,500 work hours, thousands of screws, 900 metres of cable, 20 litres of paint, 15 litres of varnish, 1 new engine, and countless details that demanded our full attention.

Today, she's sailing the Greek waters, turning heads in every marina she visits.

Thetis was custom-made in 1963 for a wealthy German businessman. Both the design and the materials feature a taste for luxury and beauty. The hull was made of iron, while the cabin was entirely built from Honduran mahogany. Originally powered by two 4000ccm MVM Mercedes engines, Thetis traveled around the world, to end up in her place of birth, at the Lake Constance, in Germany. She was found abandoned over 15 years ago at the Bodan-Werft, a 100-year-old German shipyard which closed its doors since then. She was then taken to the Lake Balaton in Hungary where she served for the next couple of years as a passenger boat.

We acquired her in 2015 and took her to Budapest to bring her back to life. The rotten walls were broken down, the entire electrical system was revamped and the two-kilometer cable network replaced. The water and heating system, the deck and the bathroom were fully renovated. The original engines and gearboxes were changed to two brand new 4996ccm Solé diesel SM-105 engines on Mitsubishi base, with technodrive gearboxes. We ordered Honduran mahogany veneers from the US to restore the rotten wooden surfaces, the canvas bimini top was also replaced by a wooden one. The entire deck made of Honduran mahogany, which is a rarity nowadays, was also fully restored. We installed the latest navigation and safety equipment, as well as delicacies such as underfloor heating in the bathroom and wooden rails on the deck. We have doubled the size of the fuel tanks and equipped Thetis with two 250W solar panels that continuously provide power to the boat.

This 60-year-old beauty has been cruising on the Danube for over 10 years now. Thetis hosted countless exclusive parties, dinners, meetings, marriage proposals and even weddings. We have sold her a couple of years ago, but she continues to seduce Budapest. Don’t miss her out if you are around!

FLAAR X FŐÁRBÓC

Interview with György Juhász — second-generation boatbuilder, accomplished solo sailor, and one of the faces of — about his experience sailing Flaar boats and his future plans.

• How long have you been sailing a Flaar?

I was long looking for a boat suitable for . I bought my first Flaar 26, Kolibri, in 2017 from László Fazekas, who had already raced it successfully for years. I considered other designs, but the Flaar is a very light yet robust boat, making it perfect for solo sailing.

• What races have you competed in with a Flaar?

I started with the solo races organized by Nándor Fa at the where I finished 3rd with Kolibri. I had long wanted to test myself internationally as well.
In 2019, I entered the challenge, a demanding 134nm offshore solo race in Denmark. I completed the race on my 3rd attempt and finished 2nd in class. In 2024, I finished second, and in 2025 I won my class aboard Victory, the first Flaar 24 built for Sándor Veres.
Before selling Kolibri to the Lake Constance, I also entered the 156nm in Denmark. It remains one of the toughest solo challenges of my life, both technically and mentally. Finishing 8th with Kolibri felt like a major achievement.

• Why Flaar?

Flaar’s expertise and philosophy are unique in Hungary. Attila Déry is one of the country’s leading yacht designers, while Zoltán Mezey is a highly respected composite engineer. As a boatbuilder myself, I had no doubt a Flaar was the right choice. What I value most is their openness to continuous development. I rebuilt Kolibri twice to improve performance, with Attila designing and supporting every modification, which resulted in winning the double-handed Round Balaton Race with Csaba Lukáts.

• What’s next?

I recently raced László Bélafi’s Flaar 24, Merse, in the Classic Solo Round Balaton Race and finished 3rd overall after a close battle. Notably, the seconds-place finisher among nearly 80 entrants was also sailing a Flaar: Gábor Fazekas aboard Zhero. I plan to race Merse again in the autumn Solo Round Balaton Race. Before that, however, I’ll be defending my Silverrudder title aboard Sándor Veres’s new Flaar. And I hope to have a Flaar of my own again soon.

Behind the frozen world of The Terror series was a very real piece of craftsmanship.

Do you remember the small wooden lifeboat dragged by the survivors throughout the story? It was built by Főárbóc Boatworks, in Hungary - where much of the production was also filmed.

Building a boat for cinema is very different from building one for real-life use. A film prop must survive the camera, the atmosphere, and the story itself - often prioritizing visual authenticity over true seaworthiness. Still, every detail matters when creating something that feels believable in such a brutal world.

I’ve been competing in single-handed races in Hungary and abroad for nearly 20 years.

Today I compete in the Flexfleet Classic Solo, a traditional single-handed sailing race around Lake Balaton. Over 80 boats registered. 80 amazing sailors who will circumnavigate our largest lake.

See you at the finish line!

This dog house was made of the parts of a Sonderklasse sailboat and a Kaag Kruiser motorboat. Their owners cut them in pieces to get rid of them. We brought the parts to the shipyard to give this beautiful wooden material a second chance. You can recognize the teak deck with the original deck structure. The letters were also recycled from a , built in our shipyard.

This boat was abandoned in a yacht club at the Lake Balaton over ten years ago. I brought her to my shipyard to save her from perishing but didn’t touch her for years due to lack of time. Three years ago, we decided to bring her back to life.

It turned out that we preserved a Pearson Triton 28, a famous bluewater yacht designed and built in the USA in the 60s. Triton was an amazing success story in the life of Pearson Yachts. It was introduced in 1959 at the New York Boatshow. They ended up producing 750 of them. They are all numbered. This one is number 643.

She received full renovation inside and out before being launched on water in Budapest. She travelled through European seas, then came back to Hungary, to the Lake Balaton. Way to go little Camino!
