🚛 Bin lorry shake-up after electric trial fails ⚡❌

Wakefield Council has confirmed it will replace its ageing fleet of bin lorries with new diesel vehicles after an electric trial failed to deliver the results hoped for.

The council had been testing electric refuse trucks for several years as part of its push towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030 🌍. However, officials say the technology simply isn’t reliable or practical enough yet — especially for heavy-duty vehicles that stop and start frequently on urban routes.

There were also concerns around infrastructure, with not enough charging points available at depots to support a full electric fleet 🔌.

Council leaders admitted the move back to diesel is “disappointing”, but say the priority is keeping collections running smoothly and avoiding missed bins caused by breakdowns or ageing vehicles ♻️.

A full replacement of the fleet is now planned within the next year, with temporary vehicles already being brought in to maintain services 🚧.

Despite the setback, the council says it will continue exploring greener alternatives in the future — but for now, diesel remains the only viable option.
