The Maserati Khamsin is one of the rarest and most distinctive grand tourers of the 1970s. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and produced between 1974 and 1982, only around 430 examples were ever built. Named after a fierce desert wind, this elegant front-engined V8 coupe combined Italian performance with advanced Citroën-derived hydraulic systems for the suspension, brakes and headlights — making surviving examples both scarce and highly sought after today.
This particular Khamsin recently arrived at Vintage Vehicle Mechanic for specialist attention. The car came in with a hydraulic leak, along with a request to clean the interior and restore the dashboard.
The Khamsin’s complex hydraulic system powers the adjustable shocks, brakes and headlights, so any leak requires careful diagnosis and precise work. Our technicians spent four full days identifying the issues, re-packing the oil-based booster, replacing the valve seals and shock seals, and thoroughly testing every function. We then bled the entire hydraulic circuit for the brakes and headlights to ensure consistent pressure and reliable operation, using fresh LHM fluid throughout.
In parallel, the dashboard was carefully restored using material supplied by the owner, returning the cabin to a clean and original appearance. Two complete services were also carried out so the car left the workshop fully prepared.
