Mc1SPARS

Mc1SPARS MC1SPARS is a spin-off from the McConaghy boats brand, developed to specialise in above deck performance and build on the mast-making history from McConaghy.

We're about to begin lamination on our new fast 40 tool for the Botin 41 mast. This mast will be built using Delta Toray prepreg high modulus, reflecting our commitment to quality. At MC1, we only use top-tier materials like Delta Toray prepreg in all our rigs, ensuring superior performance and durability.

Every high-performance component begins with precision.
Our team is currently manufacturing a composite foil for a catamaran, combining advanced engineering, precision machining, and decades of composite expertise.
From concept to completion, every detail is built to perform.

Here is our General Manager, Trent Justice, sharing insights about one of our exciting multihull projects and the design process we follow at MC1 Spars, completed earlier this year in the Gold Coast, Australia.

On the move.

A few months ago, the Red Bandit TP52 mast left Mc1 SPARS, completed four weeks ahead of the agreed delivery date.

It was a big effort from the team, and a good reminder that in competitive sailing, timelines matter. Getting a project out the door early meant more options, less pressure, and more time for the team to prepare.

Mc1 SPARS was born from a simple idea: build high-quality spars for McConaghy Boats then bring that same standard to the wider market.

Trent shares how Mc1 SPARS came to life, with a focus on premium materials, strong relationships with boat builders and end users, and a more suitable price point for today’s market.

The mission remains the same: deliver the quality sailors expect, with a smarter and more accessible approach.

Not every project is about chasing the most complex specification.

For the Sundeer 60, the goal was simple: build a reliable cruising rig for an owner who truly loves sailing.

His priority was to stay actively involved on the boat, feel connected to the water and remain immersed in nature.

The final package was a standard-modulus carbon mast and boom with wire rigging. Practical, considered and designed around the way the owner wanted to sail.

That is the kind of project we take real pride in.

A closer look at the Red Bandit TP52 rig.

This mast was built with complete titanium hardware, including Mc1 titanium internal tang and locks.

For a performance programme like Red Bandit, the details matter. Weight, strength, reliability and clean integration all play a role in the final result.

One of the key details on this project was the diagonal shroud tangs. During the design process, the Mc1 team redesigned them as a single titanium component rather than a three-part assembly, reducing weight from 510 grams to 397 grams while also simplifying fabrication.

The halyard locks were also redesigned for reliable release under load, especially when loads are applied off-axis during sail handling. For a foredeck team in offshore racing, that kind of reliability matters.

These are the details that may not always be visible from the dock, but they are part of what gives a serious racing rig its confidence.

Some projects are about more than the rig.

The owner of a SchionningSolitaire 1520 had dreamed for 20 years of building a vessel like this, with the goal of taking his family cruising.

Mc1 SPARS supplied a standard-modulus carbon mast and boom with Kevlar side stays, giving the boat the right balance of strength, reliability and cruising performance.

Seeing the boat sail off the Gold Coast Seaway for the first time was a proud moment for everyone involved.

A long-held dream, finally under sail.

The Sundeer 60 project is a strong example of practical problem-solving in custom rig design.

The yacht had limited drawing information available, which had made the project difficult to progress with other mast manufacturers. Mc1 approached the brief by going back to first principles.

Our team flew to Fiji, measured the boat in detail, returned that information to the design team, translated it into AutoCAD drawings and developed a standard-modulus carbon mast and boom package with wire rigging.

The final rig was designed to fit the boat accurately, despite the limited information available at the start.

A straightforward cruising rig on paper, but a project that required careful measurement, design discipline and clear ex*****on.
