Guyana to Enforce $30,000 Tint Fines Starting April 1, 2026, Following Three-Month Amnesty
New tint regulations in Guyana, effective January 1, 2026, aim to enhance road safety and law enforcement. Motorists have a three-month amnesty period until March 31, 2026, with full enforcement and fines of $30,000 per glass beginning April 1.
Peter Catenan of the National Road Safety Council warned that violations carry stiff penalties, with offenders facing $30,000 per glass, and noted that both vehicle owners and tint shops can be charged for non-compliance.
He outlined exemptions for medical conditions, security-sensitive operations, and government, diplomatic, and emergency vehicles, but emphasized that all exemptions must be approved by the Minister.
Exemption certificates must be kept inside the vehicle at all times and become void once the vehicle is sold or transferred.
Catenan explained that tint, under the law, refers to any film, spray, coating, or treatment applied to vehicle glass that reduces Visible Light Transmission (VLT). He stated that the regulations permit a minimum of 25 percent VLT on the front windscreen and front side windows, while rear windows and the back windscreen must not fall below 20 percent VLT.
He stressed that tint meters will be used to measure compliance, with a legal tolerance of plus or minus three percent.
He urged motorists to familiarize themselves with the new tint regulations, noting that the full law has been widely published and is easily accessible to the public. The regulations are available on social media, the Guyana Police Force and Home Affairs websites, and for purchase at the Attorney Generalβs Chambers at a low cost, leaving motorists with no excuse for non-compliance.
With information readily accessible online and in print, vehicle owners, drivers, and operators were warned that by April 1, 2026, ignorance of the law will not be accepted.
Appealing to motorists nationwide, Catenan urged vehicle owners and drivers to read the law, seek proper guidance, and make the necessary adjustments during the amnesty period.
