October 28, 1940. 🇬🇷
In the early hours of that cold October morning, Greece was given an ultimatum: surrender your freedom or face war.
But Greece had an answer.
ΟΧΙ.
A single word that became a symbol of courage, dignity, and freedom.
On that day, a small nation stood against one of the most powerful military forces in the world. Greek soldiers left their homes, their families, their children, and everything they loved behind. They marched into the mountains of Albania, through snow, freezing temperatures, and unimaginable hardships, carrying nothing but their faith, their courage, and their love for their homeland.
Mothers said goodbye to their sons. Wives waited for their husbands. Children prayed for their fathers to return. Some never did.
Yet Greece refused to bow.
From the mountains of Epirus to the streets of occupied Greece, the spirit of resistance never died. Even when the country was occupied, its people continued to fight for freedom, risking everything so that future generations could live without fear.
October 28 is not simply a date in our history. It is a reminder of the price of freedom, the strength of unity, and the courage of ordinary people who did extraordinary things.
We remember those who fought, those who sacrificed, and those who never came home.
Because freedom was never given to Greece. It was defended, with courage, blood, and sacrifice.
Today, we remember. Today, we honour. Today, we say it again: ΟΧΙ.
