Arkadi Monastery — a place where history, faith and freedom meet. 🇬🇷🏛️
Hidden in the beautiful hills of Crete, Arkadi Monastery is one of the island’s most important historical landmarks. Built in the 16th century, the monastery has stood for centuries as a place of faith, culture and learning.
But Arkadi is remembered for much more than its beautiful architecture.
In 1866, during the Cretan Revolution, hundreds of people gathered inside the monastery seeking refuge from the Ottoman forces. When the monastery was surrounded and surrender became unavoidable, the defenders chose resistance. The explosion of the gunpowder store became one of the most powerful moments in Cretan history.
The sacrifice at Arkadi became a symbol of courage, freedom and the struggle of the Cretan people. 🇬🇷
