🇺🇸 Robert Redford may not have been as big a car collector as his buddy Paul Newman. He never had an airplane hangar full of Edsels and Studebakers and pre-war Volkswagens like some famous car collectors, he never had his own TV show showing off his collection like Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld. But when you've got a 1964 Porsche 904 GTS in your driveway, why waste your money on a bunch of antique Mustangs and Challengers you'll never drive?

The cool thing is Robert Redford wasn't even a household name when he bought the Porsche in 1966. Redford was paying the bills as a supporting actor, but Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid wouldn't hit theaters until 1969, so his history with the car goes back farther than his history as a movie star. That's all the evidence we need to confirm that we lost a fellow gearhead this month.

We call it the Porsche 904 GTS but it was actually sold as the Carrera GTS, because Peugeot owned the rights to the something-zero-something numbering scheme for cars. This is why we call Porsche's flagship the 911, and not the 901, by the way.

The 904 was built by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche III, the son of Porsche Chairman Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche. It's a mid-engine build, initially planned for a 547 engine before being equipped with the same air-cooled flat-four found in the 356 Carreras.
