Meganisi at dusk. The boats settled for the night, the hills going dark behind them, the day's wind finished.

It is the first hop from Lefkada and the island people come back for — Vathi for the harbour and the tavernas, Spartochori up on the hill for the view, and quieter bays to anchor off if you would rather not see anyone.

Close enough for the first night, good enough for the last.

Sailing into Vathi, Ithaca gives itself up slowly. The bay runs in and in, and the town only appears right at the end — red roofs round the harbour, yachts along the quay.

This is the island guests have read about before they arrive. It lives up to it.

A comfortable overnight stop, with Kioni an easy sail on for the next evening.

Kalamos rises straight out of the sea, green nearly to the top. It is the island that surprises people.

Port Kalamos has a town quay and tavernas along the harbour, and it is a good deal quieter than anywhere on Lefkada. Above it a road climbs through the pines to Episkopi, if anyone still has legs after the swim.

You have to want to go — which is the whole reason it stays the way it is.

Atokos has no village, no road and no taverna.

What it has is cliffs like these, dropping straight into water you can see the bottom through, and bays to anchor under them.

You bring lunch, you swim, and for an afternoon the island is yours. Then you sail on to a harbour for dinner.

A white beach, pines down to the water, one boat, nobody else.

This is what you swap a hotel for. Not the view — the fact that it is yours until somebody else sails in.

There is no trick to it beyond arriving early. Anchored by mid-afternoon you get the spot you want, set in calm water, and you are swimming before anyone rounds the headland.

Egremni is the long one — a wide sweep of white beach under the west coast cliffs, and usually quieter than Porto Katsiki further down.

From the road it is a long way down. From the boat you anchor off and swim in.

It is open to the west, so it is a swim stop rather than a night. You go, you swim, you move on.

Moor stern-to. Drop the passerelle. Step off.

In Vathi on Meganisi the tables run right to the edge of the water, so dinner is ten metres from where you are sleeping. No taxi, no designated driver, nobody checking the time.

The bay is deep and closed in, so you sleep through whatever the wind does outside.

The seabed outside Kastos is thick with seagrass and an anchor drags straight through it.

So you do not anchor off. You go into the harbour, tie up, and that decides your evening: the quay, one taverna, and whoever else made the same call.

Twenty people live here through the winter. No road worth the name, no ferry that makes it a day trip. You arrive by sea and stay the night, or you do not come at all.

Which is most of the argument for chartering, really.

The first one up puts the kettle on and swims before anyone notices.

That is the part people remember. Not the sailing — the swimming. Half six, flat water, nobody else in the bay, straight off the ladder.

Then coffee in the cockpit while the others surface one at a time.

You cannot book this. It is just what the mornings are like when the bedroom is already anchored where you want to swim.
