The Psiloritis:

Ida, widely known as Psiloritis, dominates the centre of Crete. It is the highest mountain on the island of Crete, with an elevation of 2,456 metres(the chapel of Timios Stavros is situated on this summit), and the mountain is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network. The White Mountains host Greece's deepest caves. These include the dark sinkholes of Gourgouthakas and Leon. The most well-known plateaus include Omalos, Anopolis, Askyfou, Tavri and Niato. The White Mountains host a great variety of flora and fauna species that cannot be found anywhere else –not even in other parts of Crete.The rough beauty of this mountain astounds its visitors, which is why many tourists choose to explore it.. Magnificent caves( two of which are open to visitors; caves Sfendoni by Zoniana and Gerontospilios by Melidoni), deep gorges,small villages compose this awesome scenery. Psiloritis was the sacred mountain of the Minoans and there are many myths related to it. Zeus was associated with the Idaean Cave. Visitors can experience the authentic Cretan tradition in Anogia, the major town of the Milopotamos province's mountainous region. The plateau of Nida and the primitive domed buildings, called mitata, made solely of dry stone are worth visiting. Mitata provided shelter to shepherds and they were used for milking goats and cheese-making. Around Nida you can visit the Idaean Cave and the observatory of Skinakas.

Matala Beach:

Matala is located in Southern Crete at about an hour and a half southeast of Rethymno. The Caves at Matala are dated back long before the Hippies came to Crete. These man made caves were carved out in ancient times. They were probably used as homes or even as burial crypts because some of the caves are quite large. Over the years they served many different purposes. Currently, the area is an archeological site and is open for tourist. For a small admission fee you can climb up to the caves and walk around in them. It is important to note that the cliffs are sandstone, making them slick; therefore, good shoes are recommended.

Matala is also well-known for the festival organized every year. It attracts many tourists. Matala Beach Festival offers 3 days of entertainment and activities for all ages, promising an amazing and unforgettable experience!

The White Mountains:

The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, is the largest massif on the island and its highest summit is Pahnes (2.453 m). The heart of this imposing range includes the Mountain Desert. This creepy and haunting landscape is a unique geological formation in the entire northern hemisphere. Hiking in the White Mountains requires fitness, experience and a very good sense of orientation. There are several mountain shelters where mountaineers can spend their night. The highest mountain areas are covered by snow till late June. There are numerous caves, precipices and canyons. The most famous gorge is Samaria in the White Mountains National Reserve. It is the second largest in Europe and the best known in Crete but there are many more: to the south, the gorges of Aradena, Tripiti, Klados, Agia Irini, Imbros and Kallikratis, and to the north, the gorges of Vrissi, Therisso, Cyclamen, Boriano, Dittany, Kidoni and more. The area is also steeped in history.

Asterousia is the southernmost mountain range in Greece and it extends between the plain of Messara and the Libyan Sea, bounded by the seaside settlement of Tsoutsouras to the east and Cape Lithino to the west. This mountain is not very high (its summit is Kofinas at 1.231 m). However, rough terrain, dirt roads, deep gorges and steep ravines harden its exploration. Asterousia's main features are the warm temperatures, rare rainfall, and very low vegetation. Hungry goats are destroying everything and eating the few trees that are struggling to grow. Bare mountains and creepy rocks gives this area an air of mystery.
