โš“ Port of the Week Sevilla ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

For this weekโ€™s Port of the Week, weโ€™re taking a journey through the remarkable history of the Port of Sevilla. ๐Ÿ“œ

Sevillaโ€™s relationship with the Guadalquivir River stretches back thousands of years. The port can trace its origins to the Phoenicians, while the Romans developed Hispalis into an important port during the 2nd century BC.

โณ 1503: A defining moment in Sevilla's maritime history. The Casa de la Contrataciรณn was established in the city, beginning a period in which Sevilla became a major gateway for trade with the Americas and one of the most important commercial centres of the western world.

โš™๏ธ 1794: The modernisation of the port began with the construction of the Corta de Merlina, an engineering project that improved navigation on the Guadalquivir and shortened the route to Sevilla.

๐Ÿšข 1814: The Royal Company of the Guadalquivir was created to modernise the port and help maintain the river's navigability. Just three years later, in 1817, Spain's first steamboat, the Real Fernando, was launched from the shipyards in Triana.

๐ŸŒ‰ 1852: The Isabel II Bridge, better known as the Triana Bridge, opened as the first permanent connection between Sevilla and Triana, helping shape the future development of the city.

From ancient trading post to the only inland maritime port in Spain today, the Port of Sevilla has continuously evolved alongside the city and the Guadalquivir. โš“๐ŸŒŠ

Today we celebrate Red Ensign Day, recognising the important role of the British Merchant Navy and the people who have supported global trade and maritime connections for generations. ๐ŸŒ

The Red Ensign has a long and proud history, representing the UKโ€™s merchant shipping community and the vessels that have helped connect ports, businesses and people around the world.

As a company with over two centuries of maritime heritage, MH Bland is proud to recognise the people, vessels and organisations that continue to keep the maritime industry moving and the continued importance of the Red Ensign. โค๏ธโš“

Ever wondered what all those letters, numbers and symbols on the side of a ship actually mean? ๐Ÿ‘€

Theyโ€™re not just there for identification, many of these markings provide important information about the vesselโ€™s capabilities, safety and operation.

๐Ÿ“Œ Bow Marking: Identifies key information at the forward end of the vessel.

๐Ÿ“Œ Bow Thruster: Indicates the location of the bow thruster, helping vessels and tug operators identify the equipment below the waterline.

๐Ÿ“Œ TUG / T: Marks designated areas or information relevant to tug operations.

๐Ÿ“Œ Plimsoll Mark or Load Lines: Shows the maximum safe loading depth of a vessel under different water and seasonal conditions. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ“Œ Pilot Boarding Mark: Indicates the designated area for safe pilot boarding operations. โš“

๐Ÿ“Œ Draft Marks: Allow the vesselโ€™s draft to be read, showing how deep the ship sits in the water.

๐Ÿ“Œ Shipโ€™s Name, Port of Registry & IMO Number: The vesselโ€™s key identification details, helping identify the ship and its registered home port.

Next time youโ€™re standing alongside a vessel, take a closer look, thereโ€™s a lot more to a shipโ€™s markings than meets the eye. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿšข

โš“ Port of the Week Malta ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น

This week, we have exciting updates in Malta as we continue to roll out our new intelligent operating system, across the MH Bland network. ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿšข

Jack and K**e have travelled to Malta to support the onboarding process, working closely with the local team as they transition to the new platform. ๐Ÿค

The system is designed to support modern port agency operations by helping us to:

โš™๏ธ Automate and standardise key processes
๐Ÿ” Minimise the risk of manual errors
๐Ÿ“ˆ Improve efficiency and visibility across vessel calls
๐Ÿค Strengthen collaboration between teams
โšก Support faster, more informed decision-making

Following successful implementation in Gibraltar and Algeciras, bringing the system to Malta is another important step towards creating more consistent and connected operations across our growing Port Agency network. ๐ŸŒ

A big thank you to Jack and K**e for supporting the team throughout the onboarding process. ๐Ÿ‘

Hereโ€™s to smarter operations, stronger collaboration and continuous improvement across the MH Bland network! โš“โœจ

Gibraltar is one of the world's leading bunkering hubs, offering a unique combination of strategic location, competitive fuel prices, efficient STS bunkering, and comprehensive maritime support services. ๐ŸŒโ›ฝ

But today's operators look beyond fuel price alone. Factors such as voyage deviation, turnaround times, fuel availability and operational efficiency all influence the true value of a bunker call.

๐Ÿ“– Part 1 of our 3 part bunkering series explores why Gibraltar continues to be a preferred choice for shipowners, operators and charterers worldwide.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Read Part 1: https://www.mhbland.com/gibraltar-bunkering-guide/

Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3, where we'll take a deeper look at bunkering in Gibraltar. โš“
