THE BMW 328
HOMMAGE, A
CAR WAS BORN
75 years ago, a star was born, or
something like that. Really, a car
was born. The BMW 328, which still
holds the world record for highest
average speed on the famed Mille
Miglia circuit, set back in 1940, has
been brought back to us in a newer,
carbon fiber form to celebrate its
75th birthday – the BMW 328
Hommage.
The 328 Hommage is appropriately
named, as homage refers to ‘a
dedication to something’. Brought
back to life with a carbon fiber body,
the 328 Hommage carries on the
tradition of the 328’s original
lightness. While the Hommage
actually weighs more than the
original, at just 1,720 pounds, the
chief of design for BMW group,
Adrian van Hooydonk, says this is
because the original carried almost
zero safety equipment and consisted
of an all aluminum body. The 328
Hommage also features leather
straps on the exterior, just like the
original 328.

Cars powered by electric power briefly appeared at the turn of the 20th century, but largely disappeared from use until the turn of the 21st century. The early history of the automobile can be divided into a number of eras, based on the prevalent means of propulsion. Later periods were defined by trends in exterior styling, and size and utility preferences.

Audi is planning to return the Quattro to its lineup some 30 years after the original model first appeared, Autoweek sources say. September's Frankfurt motor show is shaping up as the likely backdrop for the reveal; the car looks like it could be one of the German automaker's most exciting cars in quite some time. Word is sales will start in 2014.

The modern-day Quattro aims to revive the 1984 Sport Quattro's spirit and performance potential. The new car will be limited production and priced well above any existing Audi. It will be built on a dedicated line at the company's Quattro division in Neckarsulm, Germany.

Audi hasn't confirmed it is readying a production version, but sources said the company's Frankfurt activities will focus on four-wheel drive. “We have a great history with quattro four-wheel drive, and this will be reflected by what we have in store for the Frankfurt auto show,” a source said.

Details remain scarce, but word is the car will ride on a modified A5 platform to help Audi keep costs down and gain production efficiencies. However, the Quattro will be about 8 inches shorter overall.

The vehicle is designed to be powered by a diesel/electric engine. The 1.5 liter, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine generates an output of 163hp with a peak torque of 214 lb-ft. All that power is transmitted to the rear axle via a double-clutch transmission. The diesel engine is complimented by a pair of electric motors, one of which is designed to propel and rear wheels and the other is used for the front wheels.
