ეს 1946 წლის ფოტო ასახავს მანჰეტენზე მე-11 და მე-12 ავენიუებს შორის მდებარე 42-ე ქუჩას, სადაც Crosstown-ის ტრამვაი აღმოსავლეთით და დასავლეთით მოძრაობდა. ფოტო გადაღებულია ტრამვაის ამ ხაზის დახურვამდე ერთი კვირით ადრე.

This 1946 photograph shows 42nd Street between 11th and 12th Avenues in Manhattan with crosstown streetcars running both east and west. The photo was taken one week before this streetcar line was shut down.

Crosstown service on 42nd Street was operated by the TARS (Third Avenue Railway System) and designated X42 (X representing the word “cross”). The route ran from Pier 83 (now home of the Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises) on the Hudson River to First Avenue on East Side. Today, this same route is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA's M42 bus.

In the background of the image are the first of what are now the ubiquitous skyscrapers of the Times Square area. Most visible is the step-shaped McGraw-Hill Building, which currently abuts the Port Authority Bus Terminal, though the Bus Terminal was still a few years from being built at the time the photo was taken.

New York City’s streetcar lines were dismantled over the course of the 1930s-50s, with the final streetcar line ending service in 1957. : Do you know which line was the last to go?
