🐒🏍️ Not Your Average Breakdown Recovery! 😂🔧

Sometimes you've just got to improvise!

We had a vehicle broken down with a completely flat battery, and with the electronic handbrake stuck on, there was no easy way of getting it onto the recovery trailer. 🚗

To make matters worse, there was a huge traffic jam through Holme-on-Spalding-Moor thanks to some temporary roadworks traffic lights that had stopped working! 🚦🤦‍♂️

So rather than sit in traffic, there was only one sensible solution...

Jump pack in the backpack, jump on the Monkey Bike and off we go! 🐒🏍️😂

A quick trip through the traffic, a bit of battery power and we were able to release the handbrake and get the vehicle recovered!

Who needs a big recovery truck when you've got a Monkey Bike and a backpack? 😂

Just another day at Medd Motors! 🔧

🔧 It's All in the Detail! 👨‍🔧

Here's a Land Rover 2.0 Ingenium engine on our engine stand after undergoing a head gasket replacement.

You might notice the red paint markings on some of the bolts. There's a good reason for these! 👀

When carrying out major engine repairs, there are numerous bolts that require very specific torque settings and tightening sequences, with some also requiring additional angle tightening.

We use these paint markings as a visual confirmation that certain critical bolts have been tightened to the correct specification.

It's a simple but effective way of being methodical, keeping track of our work and reducing the risk of anything being overlooked during reassembly.

When you're working on something as complex as a modern engine, attention to detail really does matter! 🔧

It's often the little things you don't see that make a difference to the quality of a repair.

💬 Fellow mechanics, do you use torque marking paint during engine rebuilds, or do you have your own methods of keeping track?

🔧 Renault Master – No Communication with the Airbag ECU! 🚐💻

We recently had this 2021 Renault Master in the workshop with an airbag system fault.

When carrying out our initial diagnostics, we discovered that we couldn't communicate with the airbag control module at all.

With no communication available, the next step was to locate the module and investigate further.

And as you can see in the video, we found the problem! 👀💧

The airbag ECU had suffered water damage, causing corrosion and damage to the electronics inside.

It's a good reminder that electrical faults aren't always down to a faulty sensor or a broken wire. Sometimes the problem is hidden inside the control module itself!

With the airbag system being such an important safety feature, faults like these need to be properly investigated rather than simply clearing warning lights.

🔧 Another interesting diagnostic job here at Medd Motors!

💬 Fellow mechanics, what's the worst water-damaged control module you've come across?

🔧 When Even the Big Milwaukee Impact Gun Won't Shift It! 💪🔥

Here's a little demonstration of one of our favourite tools in the workshop!

We were trying to remove a stubborn crankshaft pulley bolt on a Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost, but even our big Milwaukee impact gun wasn't having any luck! 😅

Time to bring out the induction heater! 🔥

This clever bit of equipment uses electromagnetic induction to heat the metal bolt head directly, helping to free off stubborn fixings.

Unlike using a traditional blowtorch, there's no naked flame, and the heat can be concentrated on the part we're trying to remove, reducing the risk of damaging surrounding components.

A quick bit of heat, back on with the impact gun and out came the bolt! 👌

It's one of those tools that, once you've got one, you wonder how you ever managed without it!

Of course, care is still needed around surrounding components as heat can transfer through the metal.

💬 Any other mechanics out there using induction heaters? What's your favourite tool you couldn't live without?

🔧 The Frustrations of Being a Mechanic! 🤦‍♂️😂

Here's something mechanics all over the world will be able to relate to!

You've got the vehicle stripped down, everything's going to plan, you open the box containing the new part and... IT'S THE WRONG ONE! 😩

Even when parts are ordered using the correct vehicle details, mistakes still happen. Different specifications, multiple options for the same model or simply the wrong part in the box!

It might seem like a small inconvenience, but it can cause a real headache in a busy workshop. Jobs get held up, ramps are occupied and we're left waiting for the correct part to arrive.

It's also one of the reasons we can be a little cautious when customers want to supply their own parts after finding them cheaper online.

We completely understand wanting to save money, but cheaper doesn't always mean it's the correct part, and unfortunately it's not always obvious until the vehicle is already in pieces! 🔧

And trust us, we don't enjoy telling customers their vehicle won't be ready when we originally expected it either!

💬 Mechanics, how often does this happen to you?

And for everyone else, have you ever ordered a part online only to discover it doesn't fit? 😂

🔧 A Simple Test That Can Reveal a Big Problem! 🚗💨

Ever wondered how we can check for a possible head gasket failure without taking the engine apart? 🤔

Here's a quick demonstration of one of the tests we use in the workshop!

Using a combustion leak tester, we draw gases from the cooling system through a special testing fluid.

🧪 If combustion gases are present, the fluid changes colour, giving us an indication that gases from the engine's combustion chambers may be entering the cooling system.

A positive result can point towards a failed head gasket, cracked cylinder head or another internal engine issue.

It's a relatively quick and simple test that can provide some really useful information when diagnosing coolant loss, overheating or excessive cooling system pressure.

Of course, no single test tells the whole story, but it's a great place to start! 🔧

🔊 HORRIBLE SCREECHING NOISE FROM THE BRAKES! 😱🚗

Imagine having an almost BRAND NEW Mercedes and suddenly hearing a horrendous screeching noise every time you drive! 😬

The customer contacted Mercedes, who quoted £185 + VAT just to investigate the noise! 😳 That's before any additional labour or repairs!

Luckily, they brought the car to Medd Motors Ltd instead! 🔧

After investigating, we discovered the culprit... a tiny stone trapped behind the brake disc! 🪨😂

Something so small causing such an unbelievable noise!

✅ Fault diagnosed
✅ Stone removed
✅ Brakes checked
✅ Noise completely eliminated
✅ All sorted for just ONE hour's labour! 💪

💰 Potentially saving the customer HUNDREDS of pounds compared with a main dealer visit!

Sometimes the smallest problems make the BIGGEST noises! 😂

👇 BE HONEST... If your nearly new Mercedes started making this noise, would you fear the worst? 😱

🔧 Ford Focus – EGR Flow Fault! 🚗

We recently had this 2020 Ford Focus diesel in the workshop with an EGR-related fault.

After carrying out some diagnostics, we traced the problem to a partially blocked EGR filter.

The metal gauze inside the filter had become clogged with carbon and soot deposits, restricting the flow of exhaust gases through the EGR system and triggering an insufficient flow fault.

It's surprising just how much carbon can build up in these systems over time! 😬

The EGR system plays an important role in reducing harmful emissions, but carbon build-up can sometimes cause problems with its operation.

🔧 Another good example of why it's important to diagnose the cause of a fault rather than simply replacing parts!

💬 Fellow mechanics, have you come across this issue on the Ford diesel engines before?

🔧 Would You Risk an Engine Flush on This MINI? 🤔

We recently had this petrol MINI in the workshop after the customer experienced warning lights pointing towards possible oil pressure issues.

But there was a little more to the story! 👀

The customer had owned the vehicle for less than a year and had been told by the garage she purchased it from that it had been serviced before she collected it.

After experiencing problems, she even paid for an independent inspector to assess the vehicle, who suggested that an engine flush would resolve the issue.

Now, looking at the amount of dirt and sludge inside this engine, we're not so convinced! 😬

Our concern with carrying out an engine flush on an engine in this condition is the possibility of dislodging built-up sludge and debris, potentially allowing it to circulate through the lubrication system or block the oil pickup strainer and oilways.

With possible oil pressure issues already present, that's certainly not a risk we'd take lightly!

🔧 A QUESTION FOR OUR FELLOW MECHANICS!

💬 Would you risk carrying out an engine flush on something in this condition?

💬 If you did, would you be prepared to take responsibility if the engine subsequently failed?

💬 Or would you explain the potential risks to the customer beforehand and make sure they understood what could happen?

We're genuinely interested to hear how other garages would approach this situation. There's often more than one way to tackle a problem, and we'd love to hear your opinions! 👇

🚨 A Seriously Dangerous Find on This Ford Ranger! 🚨

This 2021 Ford Ranger recently came into the workshop for a wet belt replacement and an issue with stiff brakes.

However, while carrying out the work, we discovered something quite shocking! 😳

The steering rack housing had actually cracked in half, with the two mounting bolts being the only things holding it in position! 🔧

What makes this even more concerning is that the damage was completely hidden behind the vehicle's undertrays, meaning it wasn't visible until they were removed.

With the steering system being such a critical part of vehicle safety, this could have had some very serious consequences if it had gone unnoticed.

It's a great example of how dangerous defects can sometimes be hiding completely out of sight, even when a vehicle is in for something totally unrelated!

💬 Have any of you ever seen a steering rack fail like this before?
