History of Blackburn Buccaneer XV168

XV168 was built by the Blackburn Aircraft Company at its factory at Brough on the banks of the river Humber. As the airfield at the factory site was too short to fly Buccaneers out from the factory XV168 was moved by road to the company’s airfield at Holme on Spalding Moore for its first flight. 168 was delivered to the Fleet air arm and was allocated to 801 Naval Air Squadron. Like many of the Fleet air arms Buccaneers it was Transferred to the Royal Air Force. Through its many years of service it served with numbers 12 and 208 squadrons and on number 237 Operation Conversion Unit. Upon the retirement of the Buccaneer from Royal Air Force service 168 was selected to be flown back to its place of birth Brough now part of British Aerospace. On the 15th October 1993 168 made her last flight and became the only Buccaneer to land at Brough. 168 served as a gate guard at the factory until the redevelopment of the site meant a new home needed to be found. BAe Systems donated 168 to the Yorkshire Air Museum, and on the 18th August 2013 168 was moved by road from Brough to the museum at Elvington to join the 2 other Buccaneers on display at the museum XN974 and XX901.
