As summer heats up, drivers must ensure their air conditioning is fully operational. One crucial aspect of this is maintaining a clean cabin filter.

Today's vehicles boast various technological features and comforts that enhance the driving experience. Yet, having cool air circulate inside the vehicle on a hot day is vital for numerous reasons.

Let's delve into everything you need to understand about cabin and pollen filters.

What's a cabin filter?
Air conditioning is key for maintaining a comfortable temperature in your vehicle during warmer seasons, benefiting you and your passengers.

The cabin filter is within the AC system. This component cleans the air passing through the vehicle's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) system, which manages heating and ventilation.

Its primary role is to sift out dust, mould spores, and other airborne pollutants that could cause issues for occupants or harm the vehicle.

These filters are typically located behind the dashboard, beneath the glove box, or near the windshield under the bonnet, depending on the vehicle's make, model, and age.

Cabin filters enhance air quality and prolong the HVAC system's lifespan.

What about a pollen filter?
A pollen filter, a type of cabin filter, is designed to trap pollen and other allergens inside the vehicle.

It can benefit drivers prone to hay fever during high pollen seasons.

This filter can absorb allergens and odours present in the vehicle due to having an activated carbon layer.

Key Signs of a Faulty Cabin Filter:
Given that cabin filters aren't lifelong components, it's crucial to recognize signs indicating replacement is necessary:

1. Reduced or erratic airflow
2. Inability to adjust temperature effectively
3. Unpleasant odours emanating from the HVAC system
4. Fogged-up windshield

Checking and replacing your cabin air filter should be part of routine car maintenance, possibly during an annual service appointment.

How long do cabin filters last?
Typically, cabin filters in a vehicle's HVAC system endure up to 15,000 miles or should be replaced at least once every 18 months.

However, durability varies due to factors like frequency of use, ambient temperature and humidity, filter quality, HVAC system quality, pollutant and pollen levels, dust and dirt accumulation, and air conditioning usage.

How to Replace Your Cabin Filter:
To replace the cabin air filter, locate it based on your vehicle's make, model, and year. It's often situated under the dashboard, beneath the glove box, or in housing near the windscreen under the hood:

1. Ensure the engine is off.
2. Remove the filter cover with a screwdriver or by unclipping it.
3. Take out the old filter.
4. Clean the housing to enhance the new filter's longevity and prevent issues.
5. Install the new cabin filter correctly.
6. Reattach the filter cover securely.
7. Test the HVAC system post-installation. If issues persist, visit a trusted garage.

How Frequently to Change Cabin or Pollen Filters:
Manufacturers typically specify in the vehicle manual when to change these filters. However, as a general rule, consider replacing them annually, every 18 months or every 10,000 to 15,000 miles.

Drivers over 70 in the UK must renew their licence every three years and declare they meet legal eyesight standards: reading a number plate from 20 meters (with glasses/contacts if necessary) and having an adequate field of vision. Proposed changes suggest mandatory, formal eye tests every three years.

Key Eyesight Requirements for Over-70s:
• The Number Plate Test: You must be able to read a standard UK car number plate from 20 metres away, wearing glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive

• Visual Acuity: You must have a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale, with both eyes open or in the remaining eye if you have sight in only one.

• Field of Vision: You must have an adequate field of vision, which an optician can test.

• Declaration: When renewing, you must declare to the DVLA that you meet these standards.

Mandatory Eye Tests (Upcoming Changes):
• New Rules: Forthcoming measures plan to introduce mandatory eye tests every 3 years for drivers over 70 when they renew their licences.

• Purpose: The change aims to move away from self-certification, as the current system is considered one of the least strict in Europe.

• Failure: Failing the mandatory eye test could lead to a, immediate revocation of the driving licence.

Important Actions:
• Regular Checkups: It is highly recommended to have an eye test every two years, regardless of legal requirements.

• Declare Conditions: You must inform the DVLA of any conditions affecting your eyesight (excluding standard short/long-sightedness or colour blindness).

• Driving Ability: If you cannot meet the 20-metre standard, you must not drive and must notify the DVLA.

Disclaimer: Regulations are subject to change, especially with proposed legislation regarding mandatory tests. Always check the official GOV. UK guidance - https://tinyurl.com/3e9ksem3
