A competition win, a donated space, and one very special MX5.
We ran an email comp for a free MSVT trackday spot. The winner gave his place to his mate, Mark, who drives this NB MX5.
Outside, it's olive drab with WWII fighter styling. Airbrushed panels and fake rivets give it that military feel, but it's clearcoated and shiny. A redhead riding a bomb sits on the bonnet alongside the car's name: Moxie. Polycarb windows and a pop-out vent keep weight down and the driver cool.
Under the bonnet, it's high compression, big bore, naturally aspirated. 200bhp from a NA BP. That's a serious achievement in MX5 circles. The hints are there: 4-into-1 manifold, Jenvey ITBs, ITG filters. Internally, cams, rods, a worked crank, and high comp pistons help hit the magic 1.9l and 200bhp. Uprated mounts and an aluminium radiator keep things in check, with extra cooling holes added as a last minute fight against UK heat.
Underneath: refreshed suspension, up-rated bushes, BC coilovers, Wilwood calipers up front, larger Mazda Sport brakes out back. 15" Rota Grids wearing Nankang NS2Rs.
Inside: a weld-in roll cage with door bars, Sparco harnesses, TRS door pulls. Stripped interior with Longacre switchgear and ECU Master display. Airbrushed details carry through from the exterior, tying it together.
The previous owner had let it rust, ready to scrap. Mark bought it for pennies, brought it back to life, and years later returned to show the original owner. Happy tears from a bloke who thought his car was gone forever.
That's the power of cars. Passion. Emotion. That's why we do this.
