You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t.

They know the model. They know the year. They might even know the exact spec… but ask which engine is actually under the bonnet and that’s where it gets a little less clear.

And we talk about this for a reason.

Different engines have different maintenance requirements, different components and different common issues to be aware of. What applies to one Land Rover engine won’t necessarily apply to another.

Take the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. Timing chain wear is one of the things we’re particularly aware of, alongside issues such as oil dilution and DPF-related problems. Knowing which engine we’re dealing with helps us understand the known characteristics of that engine, what symptoms are relevant and what needs investigating.

It’s not just a bit of information for the logbook, it helps you understand how your vehicle needs to be maintained and what you should be paying attention to as an owner.

Know your model. Know your mileage. But know your engine too. 🔧

22-plate Citroën in the workshop for a wet belt replacement. 🔧

It might not be an old car, but it’s getting up to the mileage where we recommend considering a wet belt change, so this one’s being done preventatively, rather than waiting for a problem to appear.

And judging by what we found under the bonnet… it looks like a mouse has been calling the engine bay home too. 😂

🚨 “YOU ONLY PLUGGED A COMPUTER INTO IT.”

Six words guaranteed to raise a mechanic’s blood pressure. 😂

The diagnostic machine doesn’t magically announce:

“Hello Sam, the broken wire is exactly 17cm underneath the battery tray.”

It provides information.
That information still has to be interpreted, tested and proven.

But here’s the debate:

If a garage spends three hours investigating your car and identifies the fault, but you decide not to repair it, should you still pay for those three hours?

Some say:
❌ “No fix, no fee.”

Others say:
✅ “You’re paying for the technician’s time and knowledge.”

Where do you stand?

👇 Should diagnostic time always be chargeable?
Or should customers only pay when the garage successfully identifies the fault?

We diagnose the problem properly.

Because an engine fault can have multiple possible causes, and replacing parts based on an assumption can quickly become expensive without actually fixing the issue.

There will always be someone willing to do a job cheaper. But when it comes to engines, cheaper doesn’t always mean you’re getting the same job, the same parts, or the same level of experience.

We specialise in engine work, diagnostics, timing chains, wet belts and full engine rebuilds, and our aim is always to diagnose it properly and do the job right the first time.
