We’re encouraging young drivers to get Road Safe Ready with West Midlands Fire Service.

Our free sessions are designed to help 17-24-year olds prepare for life behind the wheel, covering important topics including coping with peer pressure, understanding speed limits and making safer decisions on the road - and why that's important.

It's practical and educational, and we hope the classes, presented by our firefighters, will help you with some of those early driving anxieties. I'm sure we all remember the feeling of getting our first license, but also the responsibility that comes with having a car and driving it safely!

Heard about driving test faults, but not sure what they mean? 🚗

There are 3 categories of faults you can make during your driving test:

A dangerous fault: this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property.

A serious fault: this is something potentially dangerous.

A driving fault: this is not potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault.

You’ll pass your driving test if you make no more than 15 driving faults and make zero serious or dangerous faults. ✅

DROVE HIMSELF TO HIS DRIVING TEST. ON A PROVISIONAL LICENCE. 🤦‍♀️

Most people arrive at the test centre hoping to leave with the right to drive on their own. This one apparently thought he’d give himself a free trial on the way there.

Off he went, driving to his test today without a supervising driver, holding only a UK provisional licence.
Then, once he arrived, he put his L plates on. Lovely.
That’s like putting your oven gloves on after you’ve carried the roasting tin across the kitchen with your bare hands.

What was the plan?
Arrive, attach the evidence that you need supervision, then stroll into reception like you hadn’t just supervised yourself all the way there?

Unfortunately for him, Staffordshire RCT were around the corner and were alerted. An unexpected opportunity to explain his independent driving before the examiner had even called his name.

The L plates aren’t a test-day decoration. You need them displayed while learning, along with suitable supervision and the correct insurance.
Driving yourself to the test doesn’t become legal because you’ve got a booking confirmation.

If you haven’t passed yet, you don’t get to mark your own homework.
