d it’s now time for me to “hang up my keys”. I am continuing to drive with my existing pupils, however I’m afraid that I am not planning to take on any new starters. I am due to retire in either late July or early August, although that date may change if we are to have any future lockdowns. It is inevitable that over the next couple of months more space will become available in my diary, and therefore if you are looking for a refresher or motorway lesson please don’t hesitate to contact me on 07833 740471. What you can be assured of is friendly and patient instruction in a calm, courteous and professional manner. Throughout my years as a Driving Instructor, I have always promoted and taught the D.V.S.A syllabus of “Safe Driving For Life”. My philosophy has always been to make each and every one of you a confident, considerate, courteous and safe driver for life. On a final note I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have chosen me as your Driving Instructor. Together over the years we have had a lot of laughs and occasional tears, but there are just over 500 of you out there who I have helped to gain your full licence, many of whom are pictured within these pages.

After seventeen years and ten months in the driving instruction industry, I am pleased to say that the day has arrived for me to “hang up my keys”. I had initially planned to retire 31st March 2021, but have continued to honour practical driving tests that have either been delayed, postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19 lockdowns, examiner shortages and other related issues.

Throughout my years as a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor, I have promoted and taught the D.V.S.A syllabus of “Safe Driving For Life”. My philosophy has always been to make each and every one of you a confident, considerate, courteous and safe driver for life.

Now I have officially retired, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have chosen me as your Driving Instructor. Together over the years we have had a lot of laughs and the occasional tears, but there are 490 of you out there who I have helped to gain your full licence, many of whom are pictured within these pages.

Thank you to you all, stay safe out there.

Is this wheelie necessary – new cycle lane’s wider than road

This generous new cycle lane has left angry motorists with less room than bike riders. The path – 11ft 2in wide – has drastically narrowed the width of the busy B-road alongside it. As a result, cars, lorries, buses and emergency vehicles have just 9ft 5in-wide lanes.

Residents on Wimborne Road West, in Wimborne, Dorset, have reported chaotic scenes since the path was recently opened. A 38-year-old woman, who works at a garage on the B3073, said: ‘Two lorries smashed their mirrors trying to pass each other on opposite sides of the road... It’s an absolute shambles.’ The cycle way is part of a £120million scheme to make travel more sustainable and reduce congestion in the area.

Dorset Council said it wanted ‘safe infrastructure for alternative, green forms of transport [while] encouraging people to leave the car at home’.

DVSA update - driving lessons and driving tests from 19th July 2021

Extract from DVSA email received this morning:

Following the Government’s announcement setting out plans to move to step 4 of the roadmap in England on 19th July 2021, we want to explain what these changes mean to driver testing services in England and how these will affect you and your pupils.

Driving lessons: keeping yourself and others safe

There is still a risk you could catch or pass on the virus, even if you are fully vaccinated. You are encouraged to exercise caution and consider the risks. While no situation is risk free, there are actions we can take to protect ourselves and others around us.

Wearing a face covering

COVID-19 spreads through the air by droplets and aerosols that are exhaled from the nose and mouth of an infected person. The government expects and recommends that people wear face coverings in enclosed spaces. So we still recommend you and your pupils wearing a face covering during a driving lesson.

Fresh air

When a person infected with COVID-19 coughs, talks or breathes, they release droplets and aerosols which can be breathed in by another person. Fresh air blows away these particles, reducing the chances of COVID-19 spreading. The more fresh air you let into your vehicle, the less likely a person is to inhale infectious particles.

Driving tests

Face coverings

From 19th July we will continue to expect you and your pupils to wear a face covering when you come for driving tests, unless you or your pupil have a good reason not to, such as:

- having a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability that means you cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering
- putting on, wearing or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress

Your pupil must tell us if they have a good reason not to wear a face covering when they book their test – if you have made the booking on behalf of your pupil you will need to do this if required.

Your pupil’s test will not take place without a face covering if they do not tell us ahead of their test.

If your pupil makes a dangerous or serious fault on test

From 19th July if your pupil makes a serious or dangerous fault, which means they’ve failed their test, the driving examiner will still direct them back to the driving test centre, where the test will end. This is to minimise the amount of time they need to spend in the vehicle. We will keep this measure under review.

Car cleanliness and fresh air

You must clean the inside of your car before bringing your pupil for test.

This means:

- tidying any unnecessary items away from the dashboard, footwells, door pockets, cup holders and seats
- wiping down the dashboard and car controls

The examiner will do an additional clean of some surfaces.

The car used for the test must have at least one window open on each side throughout the test. Any combination of windows can be opened. Your pupils should wear clothing suitable for the weather.

Scotland and Wales

The current driving tests safety measures in Scotland and Wales remain in place. We are working with the devolved administrations to review these measures and will let you know in advance of any changes.
