DON'T IGNORE ADVISORIES!

As an AA approved garage, a VW Caddy was dropped off at our workshop for what the motoring organisation described as a "parts and labour warranty" job.

The Caddy had an oil leak which had caused the injectors to function incorrectly. Basically, it had a misfire.

This was all reported, but the claim was rejected as in July 2025 the oil leak had been flagged up and the fault not addressed.

MOT advisories are more important than some motorists think!

BRIGHT SPARKS

Nothing has shocked WMM director David for a long time, until recently that is.

As an AA garage, a car was delivered that had developed a "judder" with poor acceleration after driving from Tamworth in Staffordshire on the way to Devon. The AA patrol man thought the catalytic convertor may be blocked, but he had no relevant faults on his diagnostic computer.

Strangely there were no relevant faults in the ECU. If there had been a catalytic convertor issue then there should have been faults, which was very strange. The engine sounded very "lumpy", but there was no obvious misfire.

WMM suggested that we KISS (keep it simple, stupid). Start with the cheap stuff before we start looking for complicated things.

The customer had only owned the Ford Focus for just over a year, and before the holiday it had been serviced at a local garage.

Straight away, WMM encountered a problem. Number two spark plug was extremely tight. We inserted an expensive spray into where the spark plug was housed and left it for a few hours.

If the spark plug had snapped, this would then mean that the cylinder head would have had to be removed, a very time consuming and costly repair.

The spark plugs clearly had been in a very long time, but we managed to extract the spark plug with only minor thread damage.

With the old spark plugs out and the new ones side by side there was an obvious difference. The old spark plugs were completely unsuitable for this vehicle.

Someone had fitted four short spark plugs. These were incorrect, but to be fair had done well for the time they had been in. Once the correct plugs were fitted, the car ran as it should and the "judder" disappeared.

BORESCOPE PROVES ITS WORTH

Modern technology is a wonderful thing, and some tools are remarkably good value for money.

WMM have had a borescope for many years and it’s a very useful piece of kit.

Recently we had a camper van in for a routine service, and a very small misfire was noted.

We suggested changing the spark plugs to see if this helped. The plugs were due a change anyway and once they were removed, we used the borescope to look into the combustion chamber.

This V6 clearly had a problem, as can be seen in the photo. Three of the cylinders are "black" and obviously carboned up, and three are exactly as they should be.

The customer was advised to drive the van for six months and then we should have another look. Only time will tell...

AIR CON EXPERTISE HELPS KEEP YOU COOL

State-of-the-art air conditioning service and diagnostic equipment assists the WMM team to carry out a thorough test of your vehicle’s air conditioning system - both R134a and R1234yf refrigerant systems.

Some garages will simply try “topping up the gas”, which in most cases is not the root cause of poor air conditioning performance.

If your vehicle has no refrigerant in the system, it will probably have a leak so any gas put in will simply leak out, which is detrimental to the environment and your wallet.

WMM can pressure test your system with nitrogen before filling the system with refrigerant to test for leaks saving on pointless cost, waste and damage to the environment.

EVERYTHING’S GONE GREEN

It's been a long time since WMM have had to carry out a chemical analysis of an engine.

The car in question came in as the radiator fan was permanently on. It only did short journeys, and the fan had been on for around a year.

WMM carried out a few simple checks and could find no reason for this. The only indication was a cylinder head issue as a coolant pipe felt firm.

The test fluid changed colour rapidly from blue to green. Unfortunately, this meant that the car was beyond economical repair.

EVERY DAY IS A SCHOOL DAY

WMM carried out an MOT on a 1997 Jeep Wrangler, whose owner has been a regular customer for many years.

For the last three years, director David has been telling this customer that her tyres needed changing as they were age cracking. He also explained that even though they were road legal they were dangerous, and for this reason we would not road test the vehicle.

‘Every day is a school day’ as David’s top technician states. This year the Jeep Wrangler did not meet the MOT requirements as one tyre was now below the legal limit. The owner told us she had a new spare tyre and would bring it to the garage the next morning.

However, the spare was age cracking, but the tread was 8mm. We then looked at the date stamp, which has three digits. All the tyres had the same date stamp.

David said: “This tyre is at least 26 years old.” He thought the three digit date stamp was replaced by a four digit date stamp in 2000, but we decided to consult t'internet. The three digit code was phased out on January 26, 1971. If the code is a three digit code the tyre should be changed immediately.

The MOT certificate is a piece of paper you need to drive legally on the road - it does not mean the car is roadworthy. All it means is it has met the MINIMUM standard at the time of test. DVSA are working on tyre age fitted to HGVs and buses, and tyres on the front of buses have to be younger than ten years.

All the tyres on this Jeep Wrangler are probably the age of the car. The customer said she would save up for some new ones.

BATTERY BOTHER

One of WMM director David’s pet hates in the motor industry is a badly fitted battery.

This car came to us through the AA for a specific repair and the battery was not part of the job.

One of the team pointed out the poor way that this battery had been fitted. He spotted that the battery terminals were not fitted correctly and there was no special grease on the terminals. The battery was also loose.

He asked David how garages get away with it, and he had no answer!
