Steering Rack Replacement:

1. Begin by removing the steering joint under the drivers seat, ensuring you secure the steering wheel from moving, as this will cause the squib to be out of alignment.

2. Next raise the vehicle up to chest height, then remove the wheels. You’ll need to remove the subframe, therefore I advise you to remove the ball joints, track rod-ends & drop-links from the wheel hub & shock absorber.

3. When the suspension is removed, put a transmission jack under the subframe to support the weight of the frame when dropping it, then you’ll be able to remove the bolts holding the subframe to the chassis.

4. Once the bolts are removed, check for any wiring harnesses or sensors which are attached as well before dropping the frame.

5. Once dropped you’ll then be able to remove the heat shield covers in order to gain access to the steering rack, which is usually held to the subframe by 2 bolts either side of the rack for security. Then you’ll be able to replace the component or part needed, which in this case was the steering rack.

* Note that not all steering racks supplied come with inner & out track rod arms, therefore I advise you order new parts to fit onto the new rack, to reduce any chance of failure of the parts or damage to the new system set in place.

* Also note whether you have a mechanical, hydraulic power or electric powered rack, as each have different requirements for installation & programming, this particular one is a mechanical steering rack, so no programming or installation procedure is needed.

This particular job was carried out on a 2014 plate Renault Clio.

EGR Valve Replacement Procedure:

1. Begin by spraying the 6 bolts holding the EGR in place & to the pipelines with WD-40, to ensure they don’t break.

2. When they’re been left to soak for a while, start by cracking off the bolts (size 12mm) with your ratchet & socket, then you’ll be able to use your impact gun to remove them fully.

3. Once removed, disconnect the wiring sitting on top of the motor using a pick or flat-head screwdriver.

4. When the bolts & wiring have been removed, you’ll be able to remove the EGR itself (also ensure you remove & replace the gaskets as well).

* When refitting I tend to use new bolts & silicone to help seal the new EGR Valve & Gasket, however this is personal preference whether you do or you don’t.

Steering Wheel Airbag
Squib Replacement:

1. Begin by disconnecting the battery, to ensure the horn doesn’t go off & the airbag doesn’t engage.

2. Next locate the hole on the bottom of the steering wheel, there you’ll be able to use a flat-head screwdriver, to release the clips holding the centre & horn to the steering wheel, the centre will pop off, so be sure to keep it stable & held in place.

3. Then you’ll need to remove the wiring, holding the airbag & horn to the steering wheel, which will be 2 connectors.

4. After doing so, remove the 13mm bolt, steering wheel to the airbag squib & steering console. When you’ve removed the bolt, gently pull the steering wheel from the squib & console.

5. After the steering wheel being removed, in order to replace the squib, you’ll need to remove the plastic casing around the squib, where you’ll find 3 torx screws (T25), then remove the screws & you’ll be able to remove the airbag squib.

* When fitting back the new airbag squib, ensure you remove the red tab, as it’s a locking tab & don’t over tighten the 13mm bolt.
Also remember to get the vehicles new airbag squib programmed to the specific vehicle & have the codes cleared.

This particular job was carried out on a BMW 5 Series.

Auxiliary Belt
Replacement:

Stage 1: Begin by jacking up the vehicle, where shown on the chassis.

Stage 2: Using a 15mm Spanner, release the tensioner in order to remove the auxiliary belt.

Stage 3: When refitting the new belt, ensure both the old & new belt are equal sizes. Then you’ll be able to align the belt around the pulleys.

Stage 4: When the auxiliary belt has been aligned, ensure you remember to adjust the tensioner, in order to position the belt correctly, then when positioned, release the tensioner to hold the belt in place.

* Remember all vehicles have different procedure’s, size of belt, pulley locations & sizes & finally tool requirements. This particular fix, was on a Renault Master III (3).

Track Rod-End Replacement:

1. Remove tyres, then using a wire brush & WD-40, clean the bolt & nut which connect the track rod-end to the hub & steering rack.

2. Once cleaned, begin removing the pins securing the 19mm bolt, then we’ll be able to remove the bolt.

3. When removed, using a hammer hit the edge of the hub, where the track rod-end is located, until you see the movement of the part.

4. Before removing the part, using a 19mm spanner, undo the nut which connects the track rod-end to the steering rack. Then you’ll be able to turn the track rod-end anti clock-wise, to the point where it will be removed (you don’t have to count the number of turns taken, but only if you are able to align it afterwards).

5. You will then be able to fit the new part, ensure everything is tightened to manufactures specification (apart from the nut connecting the track rod-end to the steering rack, as you will have to align the steering after).

6. When the job is done, put the vehicle onto the alignment bay, then follow the procedure the computer shows you to carry out. After you’ve aligned the vehicle, to the specification (between -0.08 & 0.08), take the vehicle for a test drive & ensure it drives start without touching the wheel for 10 to 20 seconds.

Exhaust Centre Pipe Replacement:

Step 1: Begin, by applying WD-40 to the bolts (13mm) holding the exhaust in position, as well as the clamp holding the exhaust together.

Step 2: After leaving the bolts to soak, using a 1/4 inch ratchet & a 13mm socket, begin removing the bolts for the exhaust & clamps. If they are too rusted & become too difficult to remove, try applying heat to them.

Step 3: Once the bolts are removed, then you'll be able to disconnect the exhaust from the rubber mounts.

Step 4: Finally in order to remove the centre pipe, from the rear section of the exhaust, use heat to expand the pipe, then you'll be able to hammer out the centre pipe (be careful as the exhaust will be hot).

Step 5: When fitting the new centre pipe, ensure you use exhaust paste to stop the possibility of any leaks happening, especially from where the exhaust sections join one another.

Radar Braking Sensor Replacement

1. Release the bonnet & begin removing the bumper.

2. Once the bumpers loose, disconnect the fog light switches from the bumper, before fully removing bumper.

3. Next gently push the sensor side to side in order to release it.

4. Disconnect the wiring leading to the sensor.
5. Fit the new Radar braking sensor, then set up the alignment system.

6. When diagnostic is connected & alignment is ready, begin the different stages (Postion 1, 2, & 3).

7. After you've gone through each position, keep adjusting sensor after each alignment (continue the process until it reads 0.00, which is shown on the diagnostic) for both up & down, as well as left & right.

8. When the Radar Braking Sensor is aligned, switch the ignition off & then back on, then on the diagnostic health status of the vehicle, check whether the fault for the Sensor has gone (if not continue the process again).

9. Finally refit everything back together, then take the vehicle for a test drive.
