Booking your driving test? Make sure you’re doing it the right way. βœ…

Since 12 May, it has been against the law for anyone but the learner driver to book a driving test. Using unofficial apps, bots or automated tools also breaks the terms and conditions of our booking service.

We've already cancelled 450 tests where tests have been booked outside the new rules – and we're continuing to monitor activity closely. πŸ’ͺ

If misuse of the booking system is identified, we can cancel your booking and suspend your ability to manage your test online.

Our priority is to make the system fair for every learner and to stop you being exploited by third parties. The only way to book and manage a test is through GOV.UK. πŸ’»

πŸ“±πŸš” Filming a fatal collision while driving has led to multiple motorists being prosecuted following an incident on the M1.

After a tragic collision in which a van driver sadly lost his life, 12 motorists were caught using their mobile phones to film the scene as they drove past. Their details were recorded and Notices of Intended Prosecution were issued. βš–οΈ

A further 10 drivers also faced action for ignoring a Red X lane closure. ❌

🚨 Filming a collision scene while driving is not only illegal, it is dangerous and deeply disrespectful to those involved and their loved ones.

Drivers who use a handheld mobile phone behind the wheel could face:
πŸ“‹ Penalty points
πŸ’· Fines
πŸš” Prosecution
🚫 Increased insurance costs

Every collision scene is someone's worst day. Families are receiving life-changing news, emergency services are working under immense pressure, and casualties may be fighting for their lives.

πŸ“΅ Put the phone away.
πŸ‘€ Keep your eyes on the road.
πŸš— Drive safely past.
πŸš‘ Let emergency services do their job.

A few seconds of video is never worth risking lives or facing prosecution. ⚠️

Putting learners in control πŸš—

From today, only learners will be able to book driving tests.

We’ve made this change to:

Clampdown on test reselling and exploitation by third parties β›”

Make sure tests are accessible only to learners πŸ”

Remember when your child was little and you couldn't wait to take them everywhere?
And they were excited to be seen with you?
Those days are long gone.
Now you're dropping them round the corner from where they’re meeting their friends, so they don't have to be seen arriving with you.
You're circling car parks at 10pm waiting to pick them up.
You are Dad's taxi. (Or Mum's taxi. Unlike teenagers, we don't judge.)
So you want them to learn to drive.
Here's the good news: private practice β€” taking a learner out between their lessons β€” genuinely improves their chances of passing first time.
More hours behind the wheel means more confidence, more experience, and sooner rather than later, the freedom to make their own way to the shops, their friends, wherever.
Without you.
Before you start, though, there are a few things to get right:
πŸš— Insurance β€” the learner must either be added to your policy or take out their own learner driver insurance. Check before you go anywhere. An uninsured learner driver can face an unlimited fine and up to 8 penalty points.
πŸ…» L plates (or D plates in Wales) β€” front and back, correct size, red letter on white background. Don’t forget to take them off when a full licence holder is driving.
πŸ“΅ You're in charge β€” as the supervising driver, you are legally in charge of the vehicle. That means no holding your phone. Not for calls, not for texts, not for a quick look at the map. It's illegal, and it's exactly the kind of thing you'd tell them off for.
🍺 And yes, that means staying sober too. You must be under the legal drink-drive limit. No exceptions.
To supervise a learner you need to be at least 21, have held a full licence for at least 3 years, and be qualified to drive the type of vehicle they're learning in.
For everything you need to know: gov.uk/guidance/supervise-a-learner-driver
Dad's taxi doesn't have to be forever. The sooner they pass, the sooner you get your evenings back.
But you’ll still wait up for them – you stop being a chauffeur, not a parent.
