Turbocharged engines can make plenty of power. Keeping that performance as temperatures rise is the harder part.
On a four cylinder turbo engine, high intake temperatures can cause the ECU to start trimming power. That becomes increasingly relevant when the car is being driven hard or repeatedly.

On this MINI JCW GP, I’m using an upgraded front mount intercooler, intake changes and engine recalibration to improve cooling and intake efficiency.

The objective isn’t simply a bigger peak figure. It’s to make more power while keeping temperatures under control so the performance can be maintained for longer.

For a road or track car, repeatable performance matters more than one good number.

Fitting coilovers doesn’t automatically mean a car will handle properly.
On a performance car, the suspension is only one part of the picture. Tyre choice, track width, geometry, preload and anti roll bar setup all affect how the car behaves.

On this MINI JCW GP, the AST 5100 suspension is being used as part of a wider setup rather than as a standalone upgrade.
The important part is getting those elements working together so the car keeps its character, but becomes more controlled and predictable when you start leaning on it.
That’s where the real improvement comes from.

Another day at the workshop…
Today’s arrival: a rather lovely Rolls-Royce.
Fair play to the RAC driver for mucking in too.🙌🏽

All part of a normal day when you work with classics.

Torque steer and lift off oversteer are two of the main handling characteristics of the 2020 MINI JCW GP.

With a lot of torque and power going through the front wheels, the car can dart left and right under hard acceleration. The rear of the car is also very light, so weight transfer through changes of direction can make it feel lively in transition.

The aim is to control that movement and improve stability without taking away the character that makes the GP so enjoyable to drive.

The result should be a car that is easier to use on the road, less tiring over time and more predictable when you start asking more from it.

Still entertaining. Just better controlled.
