🚗 Classics in the Making: Mk5 Mini Body Build

This week we're showcasing a British Motor Heritage Mk5 Mini bodyshell on our Main Jig.

This is the second stage of a Mini Build after the sub-assemblies have taken place. This critical stage sees the front and rear sections brought together, with panels carefully aligned and spot welded to create the structure of the vehicle. From fitting the mono side, back panel and roof to completing the final spot welds, every step requires precision, skill and attention to detail.

Featured in this video are recently graduated Heritage Skills Academy apprentices Matt and Kieron, who now play a key role in building Mini bodyshells at British Motor Heritage.

Watch as the Mini body shell begins to take shape. After this the Mini will be sent off to be roller welded, before a final fit and finish.

A Mini Bodyshell build can take anywhere between 2 to 3 days to build, from the initial pressings arriving in to manufacturing to final polishing before it is ready for delivery.

🎯 Happy Global Talent Acquisition Day.

At British Motor Heritage, we're proud to invest in future talent through our partnership with Heritage Skills Academy.

Matt and Kieron joined us as apprentices in 2022 and have recently graduated from their Coachbuilding Apprenticeship, developing the skills needed to build iconic Mini and MGB bodyshells while helping preserve British automotive heritage.

Their story is a reminder that talent can be found in many different places, and that apprenticeships continue to provide an invaluable route into rewarding careers.

🎉 Celebrating Matt & Kieron's Apprenticeship Success 🎉

Today we're proud to celebrate the graduation of Matt and Kieron, who have successfully completed their Heritage Skills Academy Coachbuilding Apprenticeship whilst working at British Motor Heritage.

Since joining BMH in February 2022, they have developed specialist skills in bodyshell assembly, panel straightening, heritage manufacturing and tooling refurbishment, becoming valued and trusted members of our production team.

Through our partnership with Heritage Skills Academy, Matt and Kieron combined practical workplace experience at BMH with specialist training at Brooklands, gaining the skills needed to build a career within the classic vehicle industry.

In this video, they share their experiences, career highlights and advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship.

A huge thank you to Heritage Skills Academy for helping to develop the next generation of heritage skills professionals.

Behind the Badge: The Leyland 'Plughole'

For over 20 years, this logo was a familiar sight on Britain's roads.

Classics in the Making: MG Midget Front Wing

Meet Alan, Mark and Dave as they set about crafting an MG Midget Front Wing, a process rooted in skill, precision and decades of experience.

Each wing is built from five individual components and passes through a remarkable 18 stages, using original tooling and specialist Jigs we have preserved from Rover and the British Motor Corporation.

From the first pierced holes in the lower panel, through assembly and fitting, to the final stages of straightening and metal finishing, every step is carried out by hand and by eye.

This is not simply manufacturing; it is the continuation of true classic motoring heritage.

BMH Original Panel Samples

Another clip from the Mini Owners Club factory tour. 👀🚗

Where the team got a first hand look at our collection of original sample panels, that play a vital role in ensuring accuracy across every part we produce.

These samples not only help us confirm that our Jigs remain correct, but also provide the most reliable way to check details such as spot‑weld locations, panel orientation and overall shape — sometimes the best reference is simply the original panel itself.

British Motor Heritage panels are manufactured using original drawings, patterns and tooling, ensuring a fit and finish that stays true to the original design.

From MGB, MGR‑V8, MG Midget and Austin‑Healey Sprite, through to Triumph TR2–6, Triumph Spitfire, Classic Mini and E‑Type Jaguar, it’s about preserving the original design and maintaining true authenticity.

BMH Bodyshell Tags

Here is a quick clip from the Mini Owners Club factory tour where we show them our bodyshell tags. These tags are spot welded to every bodyshell during production. These build numbers are unique to each shell and enable us to trace it back through our archive records.

It’s a small detail, but an important one, connecting every authentic bodyshell to its history and ensuring full traceability long after it leaves the factory.
