When "Plug and Play" Becomes a CAN Bus Nightmare
It feels great when vehicle electronics work exactly as they should, but getting there isn't always easy. We recently had a JDM Nissan Serena C27 S Hybrid in the shop with a faulty factory head unit.
The customer had purchased an aftermarket Android system, we have tried but it wouldn't talk to the factory 360 camera or climate control. We suggested a direct fix solution and customer ordered a same used head unit from Japan.
So we replaced the unit, expecting plug and play and problem resolve.
At first, it fired right up. But during our final checks, the AC compressor refused to kick on. We checked gas pressure, fuses, and relays, all perfect.
But why?
We found out the same model, but it was for e Power model.
Same same but different.
To isolate the issue, we rolled back to the original faulty head unit, and the AC came back to life.
Why?
The Serena uses the head unit as an ECU within the CAN bus system.
The e-power unit send signals to the body control module for switch on the AC inverter, but there isn't on the S hybrid model, and the AC is belt driven.
We didn't give up. We finally found out and swapped out the climate module out of the unit, customised, and successfully bridged the systems. Everything is now fully integrated and working flawlessly.
HDMI unlocked, CarPlay unlocked, Parking assist working, AC all working ✨❤️
Happy customer, happy nights. What's next?
